  1. French made sense to me and made me really understand why English is such a difficult language to learn for many. French is all about the verbs. Everything after that just falls into place. Spelling wasn't difficult and writing and speaking weren't either. It was trying to think and have an impromptu conversation in French that was nearly impossible for me.

Yes, but literary analysis really kicks in at the higher guides when it’s actually age appropriate. I’ve never seen R&S so can’t compare.

    MP First Start French.

I kinda figured you hadn't seen R&S, but thought you might be familiar with CLE. If MP is comparable to CLE in skills, then I might just FINALLY have an answer to what feels like a forever-long prayer. I think Oldest will LOVE King Arthur and Robin Hood and the lit guides appear to be doable rather than drudgery.

I’m enabling- do it! We love them.

If we use the grade level set of 4 guides, does MP cover the same skills (literary terms & devices and analysis) that are covered in R&S or CLE?

Ooo! Yay! What curriculum and grade levels?

    We start Japanese! Wanna trade?

No. Language that uses symbols instead of letters is a hard no here. I'd have to outsource that if mine truly wanted to learn it.

I fell into another rabbit hole. Memorial Press lit guides. If we do the grade 6 set, it would actually complement his history (Notgrass Adam to Us). Looks like there are actual answers in the TM including examples of possible answers for the more subjective questions (this is why I couldn't use Novel Ties: they only have answers to the concrete questions). Tell me more.

Little Man’s TGTB Math K came today! Of course he was more interested in the packing “popper” stuff until I opened that magic wooden box. Then he ran for a pencil and insisted we do a lesson right now! So we did. It’s going to be a lot of review but plenty of new, as well. I’m excited about it.

The Kinder Prep arrives tomorrow. Yeah, his math skills are off from his language arts, but who cares? He is also working slowly on OPGTR. It’s my insurance he gets the phonics in while TGTB is for review and fine motor skills work. That’s ok, right? Double cover the bases.

I haven’t found a handwriting I like. HWT is too schooly, TGTB uses the awful ZB font. McRuffy is $$$! If I can find a template for HWT paper, I will create my own again. Anyone know a place?

Servie- it’s sweet how DH’s try, isn’t it? How bad is the damage?

Not sure. I'm hesitant to look. I'm hoping it's just the 1 book I saw that has 4 or 5 pages colored.

I have never tested my kids.

I wanna move to Texas! Never thought I'd say that. Ever.

I am required to by our state. DH would want me to anyway just to make sure we're towing the mark educationally for our kids. It's honestly a good way for me to see where I am as a teacher, too, and to know what material was retained vs maybe needs to be retaught a different way.

Refusal to bear arms/pacifist. My church has Annabaptist roots, though we are not like the Old Mennonites or Amish. My dad did alternative service during the Korean War. Over time, though it has not officially renounced it’s pacifist stance, my church (local) has come along way from where it was 80-100 years ago.  I personally am not a pacifist and I actually don’t hold to Annabaptist theology, either. I’m a Calvinist. I get into a lot of arguments at church. 🤣

What's this? Sounds interesting. I didn't know that was possible. The things I learn here really are endless.

I had dd read the R&S Pathway readers and the CLE readers, as I was told they were wholesome. Hope they didn't present any weird doctrine. Tried R&S spelling (didn't like)nd did the Bible lessons (were fine) when kids were little.

R&S, Pathway, and CLE are all different programs. Pathway, if I'm remembering correctly, is Amish. The others are Mennonite. They are all wholesome. We love the rural farm life and traditional Christian family values. Some Anabaptist views we can talk about and explain our differences in how we interpret the Scriptures. But for a very young child who is sensitive, this becomes confusing. CLE interweaves their views in a way that was hard to weed out. R&S appears to give a heads up so I can either omit it or have the discussion before the lesson. I like and appreciate that so much.

    Are you Anabaptist?

I'm Baptist, but I have Anabaptist roots on both sides of my family.

No, definitely not and I try to avoid the non-resistance taught by Anabaptist curricula. This is part of why we no longer use CLE. I didn't know enough about Anabaptist beliefs before our homeschooling journey began and thus we used CLE for all 6 subjects for over 3 years. I initially thought R&S was the same, but mastery vs spiral method and textbooks vs workbooks, but I was wrong. CLE entwines their beliefs into their subjects in a way that isn't easily discernable unless you have a very watchful eye, whereas R&S literally labels them so you can choose to use or skip those lessons. I am learning that I really do like R&S more and more the longer we use their products.

  10. When placing my R&S order, I also requested new sample catalogs to replace the ones I gave to a new homeschooler. I looked through the grade 6 reading sample yesterday and realized that the table of contents in the R&S readers (unlike CLE) actually specify which stories are Anabaptist!

  11. We still have 6-8 weeks left of our school year  depending on how math progresses (sometimes concepts click faster than others) so I'm waiting until at least closer to then to test Oldest. We will still be done nearly a month ahead of the local public school. I got my R&S order and am excited looking through the Pre-K books for Middle.

Buy a used copy of the ducks version to have on hand to pull from, maybe? Really, what you have is excellent. No need to change it out.

I literally only have the TM but it's the new edition and I haven't really sat down and looked through it yet other than a quick glance here and there. I just keep seeing all these posts about the ducks and wondering what I'm missing out on and if it's really that much more fun and should I reconsider it? 🤣

  13. Great, now Slachie, Jean, and Green Bean have me wondering if I'm buying the right R&S version of math. I have the TM for the new version which is not the ducks. I wish the new version had the ducks, but the math itself seems more up to speed with how other programs are set up and taught, particularly with teaching numbers 1-100 rather than 0-99. There is a page on the Milestones website that explains the difference between the two editions that I found very helpful. And now you all have me second guessing myself.

Spell to Write and Read (SWR) along with the WISE guide for spelling are the best diy for beginning reading (with McCall Crabs readers), beginning handwriting (with Cursive First), and spelling (PreK-6th grade) that I would recommend.

https://www.bhibooks.net/swr.html (SWR Author, curricula and extra materials)

https://swrtraining.com (Trainer, SWR & Cursive First)

    https://swrtraining.com/swr/ (Trainer, Explanation and Samples)

I have done so much research on these individually and then was so excited that they actually are all tied together this way. I now have a used copy of SWR and Wise Guide that I am trying to find time to start reading before deciding whether or not to jump in. I know it's not for everyone and I've watched the videos (lots of them) and can't wait til I have a bit of free time to start reading though them.

Chiropractor soon. Still in unreasonable pain, but will be better soon. Too much to do today. I have lost 15 pounds since Christmas. I need to work on lesson plans.

That's how much I've lost since January. I'm hoping to keep it off, but dessert coffee is trying its best to thwart my efforts.

It won the Pulitzer Prize for fiction in (I think) 2001. They made it into a movie. I had actually never heard of it (#livingunderarock) until my friend told me about it.

I was reading quickly and mistook the work "it" for "I." Amazing what one little letter can do to the meaning of an entire sentence!
