  1. Yes! I enjoy canning, although I do SO much of it that I get overwhelmed at times, and so weary of the messy kitchen. But it is so satisfying to see the full shelves of canned goods for the winter. I usually do peaches, pears, pickles, applesauce, apple butter, various jams, salsa, tomato juice, pizza/spaghetti sauce, apple pie filling.

    A sidenote: some of my applesauce did not keep last year either. :confused: It was waterbathed and sealed, but the sealed jars grew spots of mold. Some jars were ok. So weird--I never had that happen before.

  2. Financial prosperity depends so much on perspective. However, we do meet the criteria set forth by the OP. This is amazing to me but I know the biggest factor is the grace and blessing of God.

    Background: I am a SAHM w/a high school education and dh only went to 8th grade, so higher education is not a factor. We've never taken government assistance (a personal decision). Dh is an entreprenuer who grew up dirt poor and took over his father's failing business (over 100k in debt) a year or so before I met him. Maybe not the wisest decision but he was very young. So we know what it is like to struggle. Eventually we got out of debt and even began a savings account. We lived totally debt free for awhile, but we now have a mortgage which we are paying off ASAP. We love debt-free living!

    Some other factors: Good health. We're blessed to be a healthy family.

    Work ethic. We've worked HARD.

    Give some. There are needs all around.

    Honesty. Dh would rather take a loss than take advantage of someone.

    We live very, very frugally--below our means.

    Dh is a very talented and capable mr. fixit.

    We are happy and content. Dh has a heart for ministry, and his business/money comes after that--even as an afterthought at times--yet there always seems to be enough.

  3. "He has located a 60-base accordion made by Rossetti. We know NOTHING about accordions. It costs around $350 - $375." QUOTE

    I would say that price is reasonable. I don't know a whole lot about brands, so can't comment on quality. There is not a lot of care and maintenance, at least not in my experience. Obviously don't drop it, but other than that it's pretty much ready to play whenever you are.

    He could probably self-teach very easily, esp if he already knows the keyboard. Accordians are not hard to play. There are some easy beginner books around (at least there used to be).

  4. I don't buy anything for the kids, but we usually make some kind of special heart-shaped sweet treat. Some years I make a special meal, some years are kinda lean (like this year).

    Dh get the girls each a rose, which they LOVE.

    The one thing I do every year is decorate the kitchen doorway with strings of red foam hearts and may hang some streamers in the kitchen. I do it after the kids are in bed and tell them the Valentine fairy came. They look forward to it every year.

  5. Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing --LOVE it!

    Come Ye Sinners, Poor and Needy --the tune I love best is maybe lesser known, but beautiful, beautiful words!

    Come, ye sinners, poor and needy,

    Weak and wounded, sick and sore;

    Jesus ready stands to save you,

    Full of pity, love and power.

    He is able, He is able,

    He is willing, doubt no more.

    Come, ye thirsty, come, and welcome,

    God’s free bounty glorify;

    True belief and true repentance,

    Every grace that brings you nigh.

    Without money, without money

    Come to Jesus Christ and buy.

    Let not conscience make you linger,

    Nor of fitness fondly dream;

    All the fitness He requireth

    Is to feel your need of Him.

    This He gives you, this He gives you

    Tis the Spirit's glimm'ring beam.

    Come, ye weary, heavy laden,

    Lost and ruined by the fall;

    If you tarry till you’re better,

    You will never come at all.

    Not the righteous, not the righteous--

    Sinners Jesus came to call.

  6. We are SM members. We are a very healthy family and have only had to make claims maybe 3 times (2 births and a minor incident involving stitches but costing several thousand dollars). We received all our money each time. One of the times there was a member who did not pay, so SM assigned someone else to pay that part. We are very happy with their ministry and enjoy sending out money directly to other members in need rather than feeding the ever-hungry insurance monster.
