  1. Thank you all so much!! I feel like we’re going down the right path.

Dd walked around a bit with the pulse ox on and her heart rate slowed down while walking or sitting but spiked when standing still. I also looked up her blood pressure reading from an appointment six months ago and it was 100/60. So, I think getting a monitor and checking at different times and positions could be useful.

I’m hoping we’re on our way to figuring it all out.

  2. The allergy stuff is also something I have to look into. She’s had chronic hives that started a few months ago.

I do remember she had to have some test to look at her heart when she was four due to a birth defect with her airways and left bronchial tube but whatever they were looking for wasn’t an issue with her and she seems to have grown out of most of those issues.  But maybe it could have caused something they weren’t looking for? IDK, but talking it out here is reminding me of some earlier things with her.

We don’t have a blood pressure monitor but I think I’ll get one to monitor that as well.

  3. I’ve never heard of POTS. She definitely has several of the symptoms listed but she does log a lot of steps everyday so I’m not sure. She has ASD and pacing is her stim. As long as she’s moving she seems ok (never checked her heart rate while walking though) with being up, it’s just when standing still that she has issues.

Our appointment next month is with a rheumatologist as that’s where the pediatrician thought we should start. I’ll send him a message asking what he thinks about POTS and try to figure out who we should see.

Thanks everyone! I feel like we are having to constantly figure out on our own what is going on because our doctors just seem to shrug everything off.

  4. Youngest has had some weird issues the last few years but with Covid and having a pulse oximeter I've realized when she is standing (no other exercise or exertion) her rate rate is usually always over 120 and has been as high as 185. She actually passed out when she was 11 and standing for too long but the doc thought it was a one off. We've been aware of it ever since and always try to be sure she doesn't have to stand for too long. She had to go the nurse's office a few times in high school during a science lab because she felt off after standing for a solid period of time.

We do finally have an appointment with a specialist next month. I'm trying to get more information of things to look into when we see the new doctor and this is definitely one thing I can't figure out.

Also, the pulse oximeter seems to be accurate with the rest of us. It is just youngest that shows an increased heart rate.

  5. I’m gonna be honest and say some are angry because of what they see being taken away. I get that it is relative to geography but that doesn’t make it any easier to swallow. Everyone is commenting based on their specific situation but that means nothing to me. My ds had something horrific happen and can’t get in to see anyone. He’s had one phone conversation and will have another next week for a whopping 30 minutes. They admit he has acute stress disorder and none of us want him to end up with PTSD but we still have these stupid rules because of Covid. This virus is the least of my freaking worries at the moment. There are worse things happening every day to some. Kudos to you if you are lucky enough to avoid it. I’m just so flipping done. All common sense has been lost with this virus and people are suffering in more ways than you are all are aware. I’m probably done here for a while.

  6. I seriously don’t understand why anyone choose a dorm this year at dc’s university. They added an addendum that stated no housing refunds if they have to shut down and they raised rates to make up for last semester. Dorms are mostly all single this semester but you’re just about paying full price for the double room anyway. It’s insane!

ETA: And no one is allowed in the dorms from Thanksgiving to February, but they offered no discounts and charged the full rate!

  7. I keep waiting for ours to do the same because I feel it’s inevitable. They did announce this morning though that they only have about 30 students in the quarantine dorm and it can hold 500. Everyone was tested prior to move in or first day of classes and they are randomly testing students each week.

We chose no dorm but youngest does have one in person class. Oldest has off campus apartment but no in person classes.

That is what I thought too.  So I don't really understand what just happened.  I don't really 'want' him to get the death penalty.....but I have never forgotten that case.  I watched it all unfold on court tv. I believe is a total psychopath.

My bil is a prosecutor in the courthouse where the trial was held. We went to visit him and it was insane around there. We had lunch nearby and while we were there Peterson’s parents and lawyer came in to eat. It was so weird because I, too, had been watching it on tv and suddenly there they were.

As far as the OP, I find it strange too because I would be honest about never being able to be on a jury and vote for the death penalty and I’ve always assumed that would mean I would get booted. Weird.

The searing of the meat is to add extra flavor because things don't brown in the crock pot.  When I have time, though, I sear first even if I'm cooking a roast in a dutch oven because you get a richer flavor.  It's not essential, but it won't be quite as good.  It's why my grandmother's roasts were the best - she browned every side of the roast before putting it in the oven.  Yum!  I didn't check the soup recipe, but most recipes that I have for soup, whether crock pot or stove, call for cooking and shredding the chicken first, or at least the first step is 'cook and shred chicken'.  Some crock-pot people keep a stash of cooked ground beef and shredded cooked chicken in the freezer so that they can throw together crock pot recipes quickly.  I do that sometimes - cook a big batch of chicken in the crock pot, shred and freeze in 2-cup portions for soups and casseroles.

Yeah, I sear the meat even when not using a slow cooker so that has never seemed weird to me.

  10. This is my favorite roast recipe. I don’t do the celery (don’t like it) or onion (allergic).  I never  do the remove everything and strain it for gravy in saucepan at the end because it is always plenty thick enough when roast is done. I do brown it first but it’s worth it to me.

I also use it for baked potato soup, chili, and shredded chicken quite often.

  11. Oldest meets with five friends every week for D&D. I don’t love it but I do feel it’s necessary. Youngest will only have one in person college class this semester and if she finds a friend or two I am fine with them also hanging out. It’s been a hard balance between worrying about the virus and their mental health and we’ve had to find a compromise we are comfortable with. I’m sure some think we’re not careful enough but this thing has definitely made me less judgmental in many areas because you just don’t know what someone else is going through.

Both my DS's are taking them this week to be able to attend Purdue in person starting on the 24th. AFAIK they are requiring it of all in person students, on or off campus.

IU is making on campus students do the nasal swab. So, I’m thinking the saliva ones aren’t as reliable but good enough.

  13. Anyone know anything about them?

My dc’s university is using them for all off campus students and for random testing through the semester. They say they will send them to Rutgers and have results in about two days.

I didn’t even know they were a thing and I’m wondering how accurate they are. My dc are scheduled for the first one next week.

  14. It’s not so much death in young people that I’m worried about, but more the long term damage that might be done.

I know at my dc’s uni one of their athletes had it and now has heart issues. I read that one of the reasons the Big 10 canceled their football season is because they had several athletes with those same issues. We just don’t know enough yet and it’s concerning.

What is his pulse ox at the doctor?  It could be that yours is just slightly off.  I would mention it to the doctor.  Generally they like adults 95-100%.   Any history of asthma?  My DD will have a slight drop in her pulse ox and her peak flow meter shows a drop....but she doesn't notice it....but with inhalers both numbers go up.

No history of anything. Both of our dc were born with messed up airways (narrow and parts are twisted) and cough variant asthma which is why I wanted to monitor, but I’m usually the one with breathing issues when I get sick. Doctors have never mentioned his pulse ox and he’s never asked. I’ll have to see if he knows his my chart log in info to check. If not, I’ll talk him into calling to ask.

  16. So, with all the Covid stuff and hearing about low readings we bought one a few months ago. Three of us always test between 98 -100, but dh usually always tests between 93-96. He has no heath issues that we know of and has regular check ups and they’ve never mentioned anything.

Is this something we should be looking into or worried about?

  17. People in our community sure seem done with it.

We ordered take out from our local pizza place last night and it will probably be the last time. The place was packed and dh had to wade through the groups outside the door waiting their turn and none of them had masks. And of course the tables full of people inside had no masks. We had over 1200 new cases yesterday for the first time so it really didn’t feel safe.  It stinks.

  18. Dh and I decided today to rent a cabin for a few days. It’s only an hour away so won’t have to stop anywhere. There’s only six cabins on the 50 acres and all have full kitchens, there are walking trails, and all have a dock with a rowboat. So, we won’t have to actually see anyone or go inside anywhere. We’ll take our groceries, that I pick up curbside, with us in a cooler since it’s so close. I’m excited and honestly need the break from my young adults before college starts back up (mostly online).
