  1. I love the handy dandy "view first unread" button. It's much easier for me to hit that and scan through the responses than to keep going back up and scanning through the post titles an looking for the orange posts.

I also think it's common courtesy to use the quote button if you are replying to someone specifically. I think it should be in the rules, but of course no one has asked me. :biggrinjester:

  2. Some people with ichthyosis have to bathe in a mild bleach solution. From F.I.R.S.T.

Body odor can be a problem for people with ichthyosis. Regular bathing is helpful. Adding two teaspoons of bleach or vinegar to one gallon of bath water may help. The problem seems to come from bacteria trapped in the dead layers of skin.

Bacterial infections can be a problem for some people with ichthyosis. Some individuals suggest adding two TEASPOONS of Clorox to one gallon of bath water. Carefully measure each gallon of water as you fill your tub and then mark the tub so that you can always fill with the same amount. For example, add 30 teaspoons of Clorox to 15 gallons of water.

My boys haven't had to deal with this yet, but as they get older it might become an issue.
  3. There is a remote (and by remote I mean really remote) chance that we will build a house in a couple of years. I'd like to go ahead and start looking at house plans so that I will be prepared when (if) the time comes.

Where are some of your favorite sites to look at house plans?

  4. Would you be willing to post sample pages of the 3rd year section of WWE similar to what you did with the 1st year sample? It would be helpful to see an example of the 3rd year pages so I can see if it would be too much for me to do on my own. I'm wavering between putting my 3rd grader in the 2nd year workbook or forging ahead on my own with just the main book.

    Thank you!

  5. I'm all for dissenting opinions aired with respect for others. I grew very tired of her dissent-for-the-sake-of-dissent. It was annoying to have a shrill and violent argument with someone who had clearly not even read the book / article / court case / law she was arguing about.

Let's just say that I was thrilled when I realized this board has an ignore feature. ;)

  6. Well, actually in one of my education classes, I was taught that homeschoolers are a bunch of right wing Christian extremist.:001_huh:

I had a dear friend call, in tears, and ask me if I hated her kids and didn't want my kids to be around them. "Umm, no." She was in grad school and her professor told her the only reason people homeschool is "so their kids won't have to be around the public school kids."

I had to calm her down and tell her there are many different reasons I knew for homeschooling...

  7. Short story:

DH was on his way home from a guys weekend and I was on my way home from my mom's. As I was pulling onto the interstate about 30 miles from home, this big red truck changed lanes to make room for me. I was my husband.

    Long story:

When my oldest son was 12 months, he and I flew from SC to CO to meet up with my husband who was already out there. (He had gone out to a Young Life camp with a group of high school students the week before.) DS and I had had an easy flight out to CO because my parents took us to the airport and I just had one short layover in Atlanta. We had a great vacation and were actually able to go to the wedding of a friend from home while we were out there. (That was a coincidence all on its own.)

The trip back was a little different. We stayed at a hotel near the airport the night before our flights. DH couldn't get a reasonably priced ticket on the flight DS and I were taking back, so he flew out pre-dawn by himself. He took the rental car and as much of our luggage with him as he could. DS and I were exhausted from the wedding the night before and we had two pretty significant layovers on the way home. I was not looking forward to this trip at all--carrying a non-walking, 25lb baby, his huge carseat and all his paraphernalia through four airports.

We went to the lobby of the hotel to grab breakfast and then take the shuttle to the airport. The lobby was packed and I ended up sitting with three flight attendants. We got to talking and it turned out that they were going to be working on my flight! They took such good care of my son and me. They carried our bags, helped us on and off the shuttle, checked my bags, seated me right away, gave us extra snacks--just really treated us like royalty.

We got to our first layover in Dallas, found our connecting flight, and ran into our pastor and his wife! It was such a relief to have two extra pairs of arms to help with my son during the rest of that layover, the flight to Atlanta, and the layover in Atlanta.

I had an earlier connecting flight from Atlanta to home than they did, so as they were saying goodbye to me at the gate, up walks another man from our church for the flight I was on! He helped us onto that flight, and then waited for me when we got off at home and escorted me into the building (it was one of those short connector flights that disembarked on the tarmac) and waited with us until we found my DH.

I never had to carry that stinkin' car seat once on the trip home and had people with me all day long that were looking out for me. It was a wonderful trip home...

  8. None of my bees-wax I guess, but why would you need to know this????

    Is this tax deductible????

    Just wondering?

    gene

It's $312 for Foundations and $288 for Essentials.

As a tutor, I am assuming she didn't pay therefore it's considered income. Any tuition credit has to be claimed as income.

It's possible that your director should have given you a 1099-MISC. I would check with her.

Steph is correct. DH and I were doing taxes and I couldn't remember exactly how much we needed to claim for the tuition part of my income.

Also, Steph, I ended up making about $20 less than the requirement for my director to give me a 1099. She'll have to give me one for '08, though, because I'm going to end up with a small bonus which will push me over the top.

  9. We aren't dealing with ichthyosis, but with another rare and severe skin disorder. My DS6 has ectodermal dysplasia, and my twins (his full bio sibs) are carriers. Thank goodness they don't have it as well...it's wickedly expensive to treat and not covered by insurance.

Prayers and hugs to your family,

I had never heard of ectodermal dysplasia, so I had to look it up. ((hugs)) Why doesn't insurance cover treatment? That seems so bizarre!

Speaking of being carriers, as much as I'd love to have granddaughters one day, I'm hoping my boys all have boys so that x-linked ichthyosis will come to a halt in my family.

    ((hugs again))

  10. I have chronic SEVERE psoriasis

Sorry to hear that. I hope you can get your skin healed before your trip!

We have friends from college who have a young dd who has ichthyosis. I'm sorry your family is going through this too. We are praying that there will be medical breakthroughs very soon for this and other chronic conditions.

Thankfully my boys have x-linked ichthyosis--one of the milder forms. When my dad was a kid, there were no special lotions for him to use, so it really affected his quality of life. However now there are so many great lotions out there that it is more of a slight cosmetic nuisance for my boys than a real problem like it was for my dad.

  11. I boil about 1 qt of water and add 4 family sized tea bags (Tetley is my favorite) as soon as it comes to a boil. Remove from heat and cover pot with lid. Brew for 5 minutes. (If you brew for a longer time then the tea will start to become bitter and you'll have to add more sugar to counteract that.) Pour the tea into a gallon pitcher along with 1 1/2 c. of sugar and then top it off with cold water. If you remember to make the tea ahead of time, you can get by with less sugar.

I love to sub one or two of the tea bags with with a mango tea.
