  1. Has anyone used Calvert Pre k? Does anyone recommend a Pre K curriculum if Calvert is not a recommendation?
  2. Me again! Does anyone know where I can get copywork ideas from for 9th and 10th grade and also should I dictate or give it to them on a printed sheet?
  3. Does anyone know of a website where you can listen and view childrens story books online?
  4. I know there have been some thread previously about keeping little ones busy while teaching others. My problem is similar but different. I have six 15, 14, 11, 6, 4 and 2 The problem for me is that my 2 year old wants work like her siblings. Does anyone have any suggestions that are inexpensive and won't distract me from doing work with the older ones? I am also open to busy suggestions (i.e. sandbox) the problem is these sometimes occupy the little one for a few minutes and then she begins to interrupt the lesson. Thanks for your input.
  5. I have hsed for 6 years but my older ones were pulled out of public school so I did not have to begin with anyone. Well that is not exactly true I have an 11 year old that I have always hsed but he is Dyslexic and our route to reading was a little different. I honestly thought I could not teach him and he would never read. I tried the Abeka way with him and he seemed not to get it. Long story short.....one day about 2 years ago I passed the Sunday school room and overheard the teacher tell "Anthony" to read. I heard a voice that sounded like my ds read but did not think it was him because of the fluency. After church I asked my ds how many other Anthony's were in his class? He said he was the only one...to my surprise it was him reading. He actually learned from me....it took 3 whole years but he was finally reading! I said this to say I tried so many curriculum programs with him I have no idea which one worked. LOL Now I have a 6, 4 1/2 and 2 years old I have to teach. I tried Teach Your Child to Read with my 6 year old this year and it did not work to well. I began using a hodge podge (hmmm where have I done that before?) and that is working. But I would like to begin and stay with something so I am just not sure what to do going forward. Teaching the vowel sounds first seems to stick with them and help with reading later but since I have not tried consonants first I have no comparison.
  6. Thank you for this idea, I will check with the 4-H in our area.
  7. Just wondering what everyone is or has done? I have a 4 1/2 year old that I will be starting with this year. In looking at the various workbooks, online curriculum etc. I realized that the method of teaching letters is different. In the Abeka K4 program they teach short vowels, blends, consanants and have them reading by the end of the program. All of the other workbooks do the alphabet in order and don't emphasize reading or vowel sounds. I was wondering what everyone experience/opinion was about teaching vowels first. Any feedback would be helpful.
  8. Thanks....the problem is that we live in a rural area. There just is not much around. I was hoping there may have been a class somewhere. Thanks.
  9. Does anyone know of a place (other than Ebay) to sell or buy gently used kids clothing?
  10. Does anyone know of an online class that teaches how to use a video camera or video editing?
  11. So I have her doing R&S (not sure how many lesson yet) my state requirement is 1/4 of the book, Meaningful Composition, and reading 15 books (state requirement is at least one must be a classic). DD is going to be reading 9 classics. So my question is does this fulfill a literature credit, Grammar & Composition Credit and 1/2 Writing? Or does all of this only equal 1 credit of G&C. Surely this is more than 120-150 hours of work.
  12. Has anyone used Artistic Pursuit for High School and if so is the completion of one book worth a full credit for art?
  13. I have a question...I have been struggling with this for years. Is completing 3/4 of a textbook good enough? Is that considered a full course/credit?
  14. I am a little confused about credits. If my DD completes a book for any subject can I offer her a credit or 1/2 credit for that book? For example my DD is doing R&S 10th but she is also doing Meaningful Composition (she needs the writing help). Upon completion of MC can I offer her 1/2 for writing?
  15. Thanks to everyone who contributed I have just made a huge book order at CBD!
  16. I did not take offense to your comment about an instructor for music. The problem is that we live in a rural area and the nearest music school is 1 hour away.
  17. My DS wants to focus on film making or photography however, we live in a rural area and there aren't any schools or classes he can get too. Does anyone have a suggestion on how he can do a class or learn photography or film making?
  18. What does everyone use for their music and art history classes? Can my children get a credit for music if we don't own an instrument? Does anyone know of intrument rental companies and possible instruction online or dvd?
  19. Does anyone know of a modesty curriculum or book I could use for my DD?
  20. Does anyone know where I can buy reading books for a good price? I am looking for Great Books, Classics. A tree grows in Brooklyn, Catcher in the Rye, etc.
  21. My DS started R & S in 7th grade so I started him in the 5th grade book since it is slightly more advanced. So during 8th he did the 6th book and now he is entering 9th. For transcript purposes do I have to move him to R&S 9th? Do colleges look at the grade listed on a text to determine the grade level?
  22. I have a rising 9th and rising 10th. I just wonder if I decide to do the homeschool transcript at home, whether or not it will be an issue for them later in life. I mean....if they finish college will it prove to be an issue if they go to apply for a government, city/state, or private industry job. I wonder if anyone has ever run into this issue. And if so is there a way down the line to convert the credits to a diploma if necessary.
