Wow! Thanks for the glowing endorsement yvonne! I really appreicate your encouragement. After looking at the LToW samples online I had just about talked mysefl out of it . . . now off to reconsider :)
Meanwhile, our dc's grandpa has promised them a trip to the waterpark while mom is attending the conference, so it may be a hard sell, but it sounds like it's definately worth considering.
Thank you so much!

This is absolutely in our future plans...stay tuned!
Getting the basic courses up and running has been a huge project for us, so our "lifelong learners" classes are still a little distance off, but it is certainly part of our long-term vision for the academy.
We will keep you all posted.

This is excellent news, Susan!

From the (huge) CIrce / Classical Education thread on the HS board; post 171 by Andrew Kern.
Take your time.
Rest.
Don't even try to catch up.
Breathing a huge sigh of relief . . .

She's teaching a writing workshop for students. Rather than sending ds 14, I'm tempted to email and ask her if I can attend as an observer.
I'm wondering if anyone here has heard her speak?

Even easier, Homeschool Buyer's Coop has an inexpensive ($8) photo-ID generating/designing, print at home school ID card you can do. Any office supply place has the lamination/card to make it more durable and look professional. This also gets kids all the 'school' and student discounts into things like museums, movies, games, etc.

This is great - thanks for the link :)

Birth certificate.
I just did this with 8 yo. DS.
Well, duh, that makes sense. Thanks!
-
Thanks, regentrude I didn't know that.
Any idea what kind of ID they would require to print an ID for him? ;)

He's too young for a driver's permit and doesn't have a passport.
Thanks!

Would someone please link the "How does one provide a classical education" thread? I have been searching for it . . .

I don't think anyone has mentioned The Penderwickks. Delightful!
-
Thanks. After some further searching, it doesn't seem like the service requirement applies to students who are home schooled after all :001_smile:

The erasers from Staples are the best ones I've found, if you don't want to order 144 of them :)
-
Some further searching led me to this document which provides some useful clarification - no mention of a PE requirement for home schooled high school students so that simplifies things :)
I also posted some questions on a local homeschooling loop to see what other families are doing.

Alessandra - thanks for the great suggestions!

From your WTM profile, it looks like you are in IL ?? I TOTALLY agree with previous posters about checking with your state homeschooling organization and other BTDT homeschoolers of high schoolers to know for sure what you need to do or don't need to do for homeschool high school graduation in your state.
Lori D, can I :001_wub: your post instead of just liking it?
Thank you for your very helpful, above and beyond, information and suggestions!
I will check with local BTDT homeschoolers for further clarification :001_smile:

Thanks Kiana. I will check with our local home school organizations. Meanwhile, we are in the Chicago suburbs, so your link was helpful.
It also indicates that volunteer work with religious organizations isn't applicable to the service hours, if it turns out that he needs them.

I would just make a table and record all physical activity. Every time he practices basketball, goes for a run, goes swimming, does sit-ups, whatever he likes to do, just have him record the time he spent doing the activity. It adds up quickly.
Great suggestion - thanks!

This is required for *homeschooled* students? Very few states have requirements for homeschoolers to graduate, but I would say that if your state is one of the few that do, then what your ds does would certainly be sufficient.
I will clarify this with other parents from local home schooling groups - thanks.

Thanks for your suggestions so far. We are in IL - I added this to the subject line.

Is this basically volunteer work? Do church based volunteer activities count? Ds 14 is on a 9 day mission trip with his Jr. High group this week - providing free meals and teaching at a VBS in an inner city church in St. Paul MN. Does this count toward volunteer hours?
Thanks!

Driver's Ed and a Health class count for two semesters of PE, so those will be easy enough. Ds 14 plays basketball through the local park district, and informally at church; he also completed a 6 week basketball camp this summer, so perhaps that can count toward the PE requirements as well. Beyond that - I'm not sure how to approach this.

Did YOUR School Teachers Read Aloud to Your Class?

My third grade teacher was a Menonite, who read Bible stories to us after lunch. She gave me my first Bible, and I kept it until I went to college.
My fifth grade teacher read Caddie Woodlawn and Johnny Tremain to us.I still remember her crying at the end of the book.
I think sixth grade was the last year our teachers read to us, but my third and fifth grade teachers left a big impression.
