  1. Does anybody have any good resources to teach an 11 year old chess and strategy? He's really interested in learning and I can only teach him very and I mean very, very basic rules(the pony thingy can move this way kind of thing:001_smile:). Any ideas would be great. Thanks:)

  2. Being called Miss FirstName is actually one of my pet peeves, I am not a preschool teacher! If a family insists on a title I would prefer to be called Mrs. Lastname. My first preference is just my first name.

Honestly I feel the most respectful option is to call others as they wish, which is why I always ask.

:iagree: I don't know why but Miss firstname drives me insane. I'd rather just be called by my first name. However, I prefer my kids to say Mr.(s) Lastname or Sir/Mam with adults, but if those adults have kids I'd just prefer they use my firstname over Miss Firstname.

  3. :001_smile:Oh wow that is so awesome. I think ds would explode if he met one. He has such an interest in astronomy and space exploration. Unfortunately there aren't even any astronomy clubs around here from what I can tell, but he's talking about wanting to go to space camp.:001_smile: Thanks for sharing your blog post on it. It's so cool!

  4. Oh good I'm not the only one that spells it homeschool. I was starting to think I was crazy. Spelling Power does home school, our local paper used home-school last week, dh said he thought it was home school, I found in one of my Websters dictionaries homeschool, but it wasn't nor was there any variation in any of my other ones, even in my bigger Websters :confused:so I needed some opinions:001_smile: Thanks all.

  5. I just have to say how excited I am. We got our task cards from Creek Edge Press today and ds is so thrilled. We let him chose which ones to get for his own independent research time we are doing this year and after debating for days he chose the physics set and the earth/space set. Anyway, after they arrived today we looked through them and afterwards ds actually gave me a hug and thanked me for ordering them:001_huh: and then was jumping around the room:w00t:This is the boy that when this years curriculum arrived couldn't have cared less and stared at his sister like she was an alien when she was so excited to put her first math book in her bag. He's already talking about which ones to get next.:001_smile::party:

  6. Favorite food, candy, jerky, chips. Favorite movies or games portable dvd players tvs. Favorite tolietries. Themed boxes, I've done an emergency birthday box that had party hats, little debbie cakes, freeze dried ice cream and blowers(and a few gifts), an emergency thanksgiving box that had a turkey jerky, an instant potoato pouch, a mini stuffing cup and a mini pecan pie, christmas box with mini tree, battery operated lights etc. Things to make them laugh my poor hubby got monkeys that would sing and dance etc , once for Easter I sent a big pink plush basket that said Princess on the front but I had it wrapped in a way that it had to be pulled out of the box before he could figure out what it was so everybody that was near by got to see his pretty princess basket:D Good luck:001_smile:

  7. Okay I had no idea there was such a thing. Ds would love something like this, I think:001_smile: So the ones I've ran across so far are the You Choose Interactive History Adventures and the Choosing Your Way Through ancient, middle ages and American adventures by Walch. Anybody have any experience with these? Preference? Any others I'm missing that are better? Thanks:001_smile:
