  1. if we spend the year or two studying EFTRU vol 1 while we work through MCT island and town, would we be wasting our time since eventually MCT vocal does such a good job with roots, etc? OOOOR, would it just be a good solid foundation for what will later come? i don't want to do anything this year {EFTRU} that is unnecessary given the fact that i plan to eventually wind up using the MCT all the way through, but i have EFTRU sitting on my shelf that i bought last year for cheap and i wanted to make good use. :bigear:
  2. would it work to use the VP explorers to 1815 cards with the MOH 3? we are finishing up the VP middle ages cards and are in week7 of MOH3, having jumped ship early from SOTW2 at the time in history that put us into MOH 3. i'm just thinking the VP song and cue cards are really fun addition to MOH, but i don't really understand whether they would align ..... and i don't want to overcomplicate things. we do timeline figures from homeschool in the woods so i wouldn't be using them as a our timeline. advice appreciated
  3. we're just finishing LCI with my DS9:) i am thinking of all of this with regard to my DD7 :) i am not going to use PL with her because i think LC definitely does better. however, i've actually decided that we're going to do VISUAL LATIN, some random PL workbook work {we already had a clean copy for her}, the worksheets which accompany the visual latin {for free}, and reading some of the bolchazy twaddle for a little fun :). visual latin has two free e-readers on the site. it's wonderful!!!
  4. so that's funny. today i called her and she told me i would need the app, the verbal word problems book, & the S-1000 set {lessons, wkshts, manipulatives ....} she didn't seem to suggest that the app had the vids or instruction for the level within it. :001_huh:
  5. thanks (for answering your own question :tongue_smilie: for the benefit of us all!). i was actually just getting ready to post a similar question anyway. so, just to clarify .... one just needs to get the app, get the verbal word problems book, and *nothing* else? or also get the videos and all that jazz? we have nothing for HOE yet other than the app, but we've not started using it yet ... i'm just in the planning phase and gathering-materials phase.
  6. Visual Latin. and we know him personally -- he's a GREAT dad! highly recommend his videos!!!!
  7. we have finished SSL and have PL sitting on our shelves ready to be re-used {or sold since DS9 did it two years ago}, but i'm wondering whether i could use a more "fun" approach to latin by choosing instead minims latin. i've viewed samples .... are the cds really fun? am i right in thinking it's level equivalent to Prima Latina? is it parts to whole or whole to parts? is it better suited for a certain type of learner? there was SOOOO much writing in PL for a 2nd grader. it was discouraging. i felt like we enjoyed as much of it as we could, but i'd rather keep the language learning light in the younger years.:bigear:
  8. i'm looking into AoPS for our 9 yr old at some point because he is in between levels of RS math right now and i'm in "assess the situation" mode. we want him to go wide with his maths, and were thinking that AoPS might be a way to do this? is it too soon? how does AoPS compare to VT module A? we're also considering supplementing *now* with Hands On Equations, Crewton Ramone .... simultaneous with RS-E for some variation. anyone have any experience using AoPS at any time during the RS levels up through E? would it be more advised to wait til he completes level E ?? is it overlap with Hands on Eq and VT module A??? My original plan was to do E then G+VT module A {two years}. THen I started hearing more about AoPS and am wondering if something like that {or HoE} could be a nice supplement to level E without running ahead. would VT-A become unnecessary later if we did AoPS now with E and took our sweet time? i am illiterate when it comes to mixing math programs because i don't know where the overlaps are, but i know some of you are quite good at this and knowledgeable where i'm lacking -- i need to borrow your experience. i'm also considering posting this in the RS yahoo group .... as well as maybe the living math group. i basically am just trying to get a math roadmap from 4th-8th in mind so that i can see how these wonderful resources can fit together for him. i feel like he has the right natural gifting in this area to really run with it and would like to give him every opportunity to do so, since my husband and i were funneled to the "calculus trap" :/
  9. thanks! this helps! and i had forgotten about the accelerated math board ... i'll post there too
  10. i have some potential ideas but am uncertain as to whether they are right :tongue_smilie: so i'll chime in after i :big ear: for a bit of time. :grouphug:

  12. woooopS! one more thing: does it matter much to have the "new edition" in alex et zoe??
  13. if using BA as a supplement to RS-C, did you find you went a few days/week in each one, or just a few weeks in one and then at a natural pause point, you switched to the other? or was it even that predictable? another question, do you think a child going in to RS-E would need to start with BA-3a? what if i wanted to just supplement RS-B with MEP {for variation} until she could transition over to RS-C and the BA combo?? advice?? i don't know anything about MEP and after spending about 30 min on their site last night, i got REALLY discouraged with not being able to ascertain where to even begin. :glare:
  14. there's just no set .... but honestly, it's not hard to just set aside these household items in a bin for easy retrieval and then run to walmart to get most everything else you might be missing. i like to keep the chemistry sugar/bakingsoda/salt/oil/vinegar/etc etc etc separate from our own eating supplies :) :grouphug:
  15. ok. update time, ladies :group hug: i'm continuing to mull this over, going back and forth between the samples, looking at horrible books {which i just learned about!}, and i am pretty much seeing that .... i'm going to order the easy french and the easy french reader on amazon to start brushing up on my own french this summer... i've requested every french related thing i can find at our library :tongue_smilie: we'll take that along with us on our 12 day trip this month and see what that leads to in the way of "i enjoy *this* part of learning french .... hoping to uncover whether it's reading french books, singing french songs, recognizing french-english-latin connections, or grammar exercises that he loves, etc etc etc. and ..... then i'm going to decide between Alex et Zoe or SYRWTLF. let's review. alex et zoe -- mom needs to know french; cps are native speakers; we don't know the best place to purchase this stateside. SYRWTLF -- very clear grammar explanation; a bit more mommy-user-friendly if mama doesn't speak french fluently; easy to purchase at horriblebooks am i tracking with y'all? sometimes i get all my wires crossed as i listen to the wonderful ideas and experiences you offer. :bigear:
  16. my DD is at the end of B; DS just finished D {and excited about E}. i was thinking of taking some "time off" from RS for fun group math sessions, featuring beast 3A, RS favorite games, some other mathy-games we have on hand some hands on equations, some crew ton ramone vids, and maybe even some MEP. i figure DD being in RS-B is probably too young for BA 3A but at least she can be nearby. she's not spatially wired up like DD is. having finished RS-D, do you think Beast 3A would be too easy or just build from the ground up, and goa bit faster if it is "too" easy .... also, i was wondering if anyone might offer commentary as to which MEP levels sync well with RS levels. i've been such a RS devotee for the last 5 years, i haven't even "dated" anybody else's math program, except the Living Math books, which we enjoy!
  17. are there any families that have found Beast Academy to fit well into a particular level of RS Math? i tried to schlog through the 50-some-odd pages of posts about beast academy guinea pigs and .... well, here i am just starting a new thread :tongue_smilie:
  18. these are all basically independent type workbooks .... with only occasional or minimal help from mom daily grams {we work a grade ahead} map skills wkbk [like steck vaughn] critical thinking co books such as mind benders, building thinking skills, math analogies, a few others .... prufrock press logic books {primarily logic, logic countdown, etc} explode the code daily paragraph editing or editor in chief beyond the code {?} growing with grammar {i think} vocabulary from classical roots {no personal experience with this yet} copywork! that's a subject unto itself. :) i *heart* copy work. rand mcnally makes these road trip map activity books. my mom purchased several for our kids before a road trip. they are basically just random fun activities all centered around geo. themes. my kids worked on them a bit during our trip only, since they weren't intended as a school-desk purchase. hth, or at least gets your wheels a'turning.
  19. we've used this since january -- just started into book 2 {properties of molecules} and haven't really found it necessary to have a kit. SOOOO many of the things are just household items. i've supplemented with a few other experiment-intense books because i run a little 2x/month chemistry club for us and 2 other families. it's really been easy to just gather all on one saturday and have it all sitting in ONE BIG sterilite tub for easy retrieval. we also asked our neighbors to save their drink containers, etc, b/c we don't drink soft drinks or plastic water bottles. that was really helpful to have spare containers {running out our ears} stocked into a garbage bag for easy retrieval. hth
  20. bump. getting ready to finalize my decision to order. i've narrowed it to galore park SYRWTLF, l'arte de lire, and alex et zoe. i've showed all the samples to DS. he has his pick. i have mine. they don't match. this doesn't perplex me {i'm used to it, and he said he's actually excited about all of them and will be thrilled no matter what i finally decide}. what perplexes me is which approach is really going to have the best audio cps of all these three options, and also which are going to be best for him as a spatial learner .... *and* which ones could be inclusive for my younger DD who just might want to follow along as a delight. oh, the other deciding criteria is which one is easiest and simplest to implement. :) just open and go type of stuff .... anyone want to chime in on those three options? :)
  21. since we're doing WWE and IEW in combo, could i just omit the writing assignments in MCT, or are they part and parcel to the "MCT experience"? i haven't looked at them yet .... what book are they contained in? i don't want to overkill writing this year, esp since we've basically unschooled writing up until this point.
