The older and more advanced kids are having no trouble doing the lessons in class, with the exception of the poetry writing. This is more difficult becasue the weekly lessons ask the student to create a poem based on the meter that they've learned that week. It is an excellent writing excercise! I have been teaching 2 lessons a week- a meter and a figure of speech, as well as having the kids perform a poem and read what they've written - all of this in an hour:). You could teach one lesson at a time and take much less time than we have. We've used IEW for years and it was wonderful to discover so many of the figures of speech are actually stylistic techniques. Great reinforcement! Poetry also shows the student the exceptions to the rules (for instance, in poetry it is perfectly acceptable to end a phrase or sentence with a preposition, this is not o.k. in narrative writing.) In addition to the workbook, we do weekly presentations and are currently working as a group on a One Act Play (for competition) that heavily features poetry written by kids in a concentration camp. The Poetry class was an excellent basis for the work we are doing in the play. At home we were working through IEW's Poetry program. I highly recommend poetry memorization in conjunction with the book- which includes many famous poems. I agree, Poetry seems like one of those things that you have to work to "fit it," but the more I learn the more fundamental it seems to me. We are doing "Can you hear them crying?" by Virginia Stringer, available from Contemporary Drama Services. https://www.contemporarydrama.com/CatalogDetails.aspx?cat=523 We've performed a couple of plays through them and have been pleased. Logos also has plays available that we've used for drama camp. The eled plays are generally myths and our kids have really enjoyed them. You might have seen the old 2000 version which has a new cover (2012 version), but it's the same. The 2012 version has DVDs with it (though the DVDs are compatible with the 2000 version as well).
