Book club book suggestions

Recommended Posts

My daughter started an action/adventure book club for 11/12/13 year olds, mostly 6th! 7th grader/ one 5th grader these are the books we have read so far: we meet once per month, it's been fun!

The Girl who could fly by Victoria Forester (excellent book - all really liked it - great discussion)

Green Rider by Kristen Britain ( 504 pages - but really worth the read and discussion)

The Trumpeter of Krakow by Eric Kelly (newberry winner)

Wake up missing by Kate Messner

Gregor the Overlander/ by Suzanne Collins

Wings of Fire book one: the Dragonet Prophesy by Tui T. Sutherland (one kid loves dragons and chose this one - a real easy read - great discussion - lots of themes)

Hero by Mike Lupica (our Jan 2015 book)

I facilitated a middle school girls book club for my oldest dd.  In the younger years, I recall that we read:

The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe (followed by the recently released film

The Bronze Bow

The Hedge of Thorns

Romeo & Juliet

Treasures of the Snow (Patricia St John) (followed by the DVD at home)

Star of Light (Patricia St John)

I would also consider:

Watership Down

Island of the Blue Dolphins

The Black Pearl

Tom Sawyer

I LOVED doing The Hiding Place and the Giver, but both have themes or scenes that are too much for highly sensitive kids.

Enjoy!

Lisa

Momo (Michael Ende)

The View from Saturday (E.L. Konigsburg)

The City of Ember (Jeanne DuPrau)

Anne of Green Gables (L.M. Montgomery)

The House of Arden (E. Nesbit)

Understood Betsy (Dorothy Canfield Fisher)

The Mennyms (Sylvia Waugh)

Thimble Summer (Elizabeth Enright)

When Marnie Was There (Joan G. Robinson)

The Moorchild (Eloise McGraw)

Mockingbird (Kathryn Erskine) (maybe) - the main character has Asperger's and her brother dies before the story starts, it's how she deals with his death comes to terms with it
