Crimson Wife
I know I've seen a free phonics program out there that has printables with made-up CVC words (like ZOP) but I'm blanking on the name of it. Does anyone know which one I'm talking about? DD has clearly memorized a bunch of the words on the flashcards I've been running with her. So I need to have materials that will allow me to word on the decoding & blending that she's not going to know by sight.
Bright Light
So, you are looking for CVC words that have no meaning, like "lat"? Have you considered moving-on to other spelling patters, or changing your teaching method. For example, teach the word "flat". Sound it out left to right. Don Potter's "Blend Phonics" works great for that. There is reason to avoid the use of made-up words to teach or even check reading ability. ElizabethB
I didn't know, but my game does basically the same thing: http://www.thephonicspage.org/On%20Phonics/concentrationgam.html And, We All Can Read has an entire book full of nonsense words, I use it with my remedial students who need even more nonsense word work than my game can provide. http://weallcanread.com/phonics-program-core-book.html Also, the syllables in Webster function as nonsense words at first, especially if you don't always do them in order. Guest readingwithintent
I would recommend against going down the road of made up CVC words. As another poster said, look at moving onto CVVC or CCVC words. Also try out these CVC word wheels. It sound like they might really help out. KathyBC
Elizabeth B's free, printable phonics concentration game, which sometimes made real words and at others made nonsense words, was very helpful at our house.
