just cross

Recommended Posts

Ds7's homework this week includes picking 5 words with the "ow" phonogram and using them in a poem or or other piece of creative writing.

This is akin to asking him to poke his eyes out and complete b|$$$y busy work. Just whiny and cross. Go back to what you were doing.

I feel your pain.  About a month ago I asked Miss E to do a simple worksheet.  All she had to do was think of three adjectives for several categories of things.  You would think it was child abuse.  I think the main problem was that it was in a workbook labeled "writing."  Ugh.

Yeah, my son had to write a sentence for each of his spelling words last week. He challenged himself to put as many words into each sentence as possible, and then to rhyme them. They were complete nonsense but fit the requirement. :p Hang in there!

I think we will just ignore it and do WWE as usual unless he wants to do it. It is not like anyone really cares. His maths homework is to do a minute quiz every day and practice those he misses. As far as I can tell though he just doesn't know the 6, 7 and 8 times tables (he certainly has never had homework that was more than facts to 20) so we are ignoring that homework in favour of learning the times tables and filling in times tables grids.

I'm not entirely sure what verbal mental fluency ie:-) if it is the maths we will probably do some of the tests in the weekend after we have spent a few days getting the missing bits (he has never been asked do times tables for homework tables store - a few weeks ago his homework was the +2 facts). If it is the writing we will do the spelling and we will probably make up some silly sentences (we often do funny rhyming sentences with each other) but I won't spend 2 hours prodding him to make up a story or a poem.

He is 7 years and 2 months old and I am seeing a lot of improvement since we starting doing WWE but he doesn't quite see the world the way other kids do.

The kid can surprise you sometimes. I remembered my son had hard time to use assigned high frequency word to come up with story with minimium 7 sentences and begin/middle/ending structure. He needed me holding hand for that particular homework for about a month(they had that homework once a week to go with wall words during 2nd half of 2nd grade). It normally took us an hour to do it. However, in the last two weeks, he started to complete this type of homework in aftercare by himself. I only need to help him revise a little bit or fix the grammer when we get home. I guess he started to feel comfortable about that.

We play lots of games and read heaps. He has actually got a lot better at making stuff up (he was never good at this) but he isn't quite ready to make it up and get it written down under time pressure. We are only 3/8ths of the way through the year so I think he will get it this year.
