AimeeM
We were set to enroll her at the Catholic school. Shortly before that decision, I found a nifty co-op with classes taught by teachers hired by the co-op, huge field trips, and a real feeling of "community". The kicker? It's a protestant group with a SOF. I e-mailed the director and asked her what signing the SOF meant; she asked me to clarify. When I told that we're Catholic, she very kindly said that I can sign it acknowledging that *this* is the perspective from which they teach - but not that I agree with it. She did give full disclosure that some things taught may not mesh with my family's beliefs, but that she is fairly sure that being a bit choosy with the class picks could help with that (for example, not enrolling for general science using apologia; sticking with engineering and anatomy instead, etc). She also said that "bashing" of other faiths is not allowed on any level and that the teachers are very aware it isn't tolerated, so that shouldn't be a problem for us. DD11 asked, the other night, if she *had* to go back to school! She wants to stay home and attend the co-op instead! I'm not sure whether to jump for joy... or cry, lol. Anyone who has read my other posts knows that this decision was for both of us - she wanted to go back; I felt like our relationship was becoming incredibly strained in her preteen years and felt she would be better served elsewhere for now. Of course I'm going to let her stay home. I'm excited... and rather tired at the same time... just thinking about it, lol.

Luckymama
Wow, you've been on quite the rollercoaster! The co-op sounds really interesting! What classes might she take next year and what might you teach at home?
AimeeM
Wow, you've been on quite the rollercoaster! The co-op sounds really interesting! What classes might she take next year and what might you teach at home? Assuming there are spots left when we go for open enrollment (previous members had first dibs yesterday, I think), she'll take Anatomy, Middle School Art, Middle School Engineering, and Critical Thinking (I'm a bit worried about this because of the text they use, but we'll see). We're opting out of math (because she's accelerated there and there isn't an option for her grade to take Algebra I, that I saw), writing (I wanted to do this, but it says the student must have taken IEW the year previous, and we didn't use IEW). At home I'll do religion, history, language arts, math, Italian. Okay, now that I write it out, I realize that we're paying for her to go and take enrichment classes, since we're opting out of most academic classes (but for science). Lol! ETA: The co-op is only once a week, since I'm not enrolling for math or general science.
