ednkirstin
I've been using AoPS Prealgebra for about a month with my son. I have been well pleased with the curriculum, as it offers him the challenge that he needs. However, somehow I missed the fact that AoPS has free instructional videos on their website. Since starting to use them a few days ago, math is going so much smoother! I thought I'd post this for anyone else who may have missed these wonderful resources. They offer videos for Prealgebra, Algebra, Counting and Probability and Mathcounts/AMC.
Sebastian (a lady)
The Alcumus online problem sets are also very good. You can target a particular concept or have the program follow a specific book.

It's great if you need extra practice problems, but don't want to add anything to AOPS. Using the book + videos + Alcumus problems has been excellent. I have never been so happy with a curriculum (especially a math curriculum).
LisaKinVA
So...do you do the book then video or video then book?
redsquirrel
Well AoPS is designed to be a discovery math program. So, I would have my son do the reading in a section and work out the problems. We would go over the explanations as he finished each problem. Then, the next day he would watch the videos and then do the exercises. If I tried to have him read the section with the problems and then do the exercises he would get too tired. It was just too much for one sitting. Woodland Mist Academy
Well AoPS is designed to be a discovery math program. :iagree: Your approach is similar to ours. Ideally the student would complete the chapter problems in the book before watching the video, otherwise the discovery aspect is lessened. We use the videos more for reinforcement (and fun!), as opposed to a lesson to introduce the concept.

Maybe it is just a temporary glitch.---Nevermind - it was our internet blocker, got it fixed. :0) Edited November 6, 2012 by A.J. at J.A.
