JadeOrchidSong
Do you have a list of readers and read-alouds that go with SOTW 1 for 3rd and 1st graders? I have the AG book and requested a ton of books from my library just now. However, I wonder if you have tried these books or other extra books for this age group. Please let me know. Thanks. We finished 18 weeks of SL core 1 when I bought SOTW 1 and AG to go with it. I stopped core 1 just to review/redo with SOTW 1. I had fun writing on air dry clay the cuneiform, and dh did paper making with ds and ds wrote their names in Egyptian writing. We also made a Nile River model. I am waiting for the grass to grow! I am so excited! We will do more than two chapters a week with maps and activities to review as well as reading the library books. Then we will continue with the core 1/SOTW combo. Amber in AUS
The books we have used are listed on my blog under Pre-Primary. DD has especially loved the Gilgamesh trilogy.

You Wouldn't Want to Be a Sumerian Slave Lugalbanda (this is the story of Gilgamesh's father) Usborne Beginners Egyptians Tut's Mummy: Lost and Found Mufaro's Beautiful daughters (African) Adventures in Ancient China Confucius: Chinese Philosopher The Trojan Horse: How the Greeks Won the War The Adventures of Odysseus The Great Alexander the Great by Joe Lasker The Story of Rome Cleopatra by Diane Stanley Edited June 4, 2010 by Lovedtodeath
misidawnrn
we must be on the same chapter! Today DD and I tried to write our names with a big nail and a hammer on the sidewalk (shhh don't tell dad!) and we wrote them on our clay...aka playdough and we wrote them on paper. DD agrees, paper is better! I haven't found any good RA books but DD really likes the Usborne World History book that I got on Amazon. It does an excellent job of talking about what we are learning and the pictures are fun too. When my 8yo niece comes over she always asks to look at that book. I think she is a little intrigued by the naked people in it  She obviously hasn't seen much of that and my sister doesn't have any books like it at her house. (my sister doesn't mind DD looking at it and the pictures are tactful, not p*rnographic) My niece loves reading the stories about their houses etc. Today it had a picture of a little boy getting a whipping with a stick for not doing his work well for the teacher in Sumeria. I asked DD "aren't you glad you don't get a spanking with a stick when you don't listen to mommy and do your work right?!" She enthusiastically said "YES!" What does it mean? Thank you very much for the list. We did some of this already. We listened to 8 hours CD about the adventures of Odysseus by Mary Pope Usborne in our car travel to Itasca State Park last week and it was great. However, we are reviewing what we already covered in Sonlight Core 1 and we are doing 3 chapters of SOTW 1 now so that we can get to where we were (week 19 of Core 1) and then slow down to continue. We are mainly listening to one chapter a day and answer the narration questions for review and do some hands-on projects. My ds added papyrus boats to their Nile River model and even put some twist tie figures on the boat, one of them with a spear in the hand for hunting fish or hippos with. They also wanted to add the pyramids to the river bank! We are having fun here and have been talking to our neighbors about our river and writing. They are impressed.
