SS in MD
For TOG year 2, My 8th grader using Rhetoric (The Middle Ages - by Barbara Hanawalt) She also wants to do more reading, so I wanted to know who do you all like Faith in the Byzantine World (History In-Depth reading) or Western Civ by Spielvogel for an 8th grader? I was leaning more towards Western Civ b/c we can use it for later Units and hs years. But is this text a hard read for an 8th grader? Would another be better? Any suggestions?? Thanks SO mcuh
ChemMommy
but, it is a textbook. It is dry and terse on all topics. My son handled it in 9th grade and didn't complain, but I don't think he would have enjoyed the experience at all in 8th grade. What about reading some of the dialectic stuff for your 8th grader? 8th is young for rhetoric. I'm sorry I can't comment on "Faith..." because we are just starting to read it this week. Karenciavo
If you think your 8th grader is ready for rhetoric work than Western Civ shouldn't be too hard. I actually prefer The Western Heritage by Kagan for Years 2 & 3. It was an especially great fit for those times when we studied European history. I use the 5th edition (it was free :D)
SS in MD
Pam, I should have clarified my post. DD (and I) felt The Story of Europe (Dialectic History core) and Our Island Story (History in-depth) was to easy and not enough detail. So she wanted to read The Middle Ages book. Perhaps she should read Streams of Civ if she wants more to read? Just thinking out loud! LOL Thanks!
KnitWit
My daughter read "Faith in the Byzantine World" and just said it was very interesting. It is *just the facts ma'am*. LOL! She *did* say that if she weren't already interested in the subject, she might have thought it dry...but she has LOVED this year so far! :)
