slow reader

my 15 ds is a slow but tougher reader. he is going through the Ancient Great books list/ WTM

he has read so far an Gilgamesh, abridged Iliad and odyssey, Genesis, and Herodotus.

he has been reading Herodotus for nearly 4 months. ( our school year here starts at the end of January.

what I am worried about is that he isn't going to get through the 8 books recommended as a minimum. He reads for at least 1 1/2 -2 hours a day.

what would you guys recommend? just keep on reading and see how many we get through?

Where did you get the "8 book minimum"?

Herodotus must be worth 2 books!

I do "units" rather than books. I like to do a unit of poetry, Shakespeare, speech, short stories, literary terms, Christian lit, and drama as well as the normal great works of literature from the ancients on up through the timeline (most books are considered a single unit). I can't think of anything else right now that is included in my list... I scatter these units throughout the 4 years of high school. Could you find tickets to a good play? You could read the play and then attend it as a unit that will be part of your "8"? If you read the play out loud together, it would only take a couple of days out of your school year, helping you catch up on the time you feel has slipped away. I just finished planning our poetry unit for this next year--Progeny Press Intro to Poetry: 17 days. Or you can do a couple of short books where you spend time discussing them but have no paper assigned--we will be doing Screwtape Letters this year as part of our Christian Lit. Many times I do include a list of books that the student read on his own and consider this a "unit". LOTR, The Hobbit, Les Miserables, Pride and Prejudice--books worthy of listing on a high school summary. If your child reads anything like this on his own, you could count that into your list of 8.

Just some ideas.

I would recommend a speed reading course. My oldest was an extremely slow reader as well. The speed reading course was definitely worth every penny and improved his reading to "average' level.

The course starts with them reading as fast as they can for 1 min and doing a 1 min re-tell. (This incorporates both pushing speed while trying to maintain comprehension). They eventually progress to 5 mins.

He took the course between his soph and jr yr. I am so glad we addressed this issue prior to his going to college (as well as the ACT.)
