Anyone here a carseat safety specialist? I have questions

Recommended Posts

Well they've done it again. I was just doing some research on the booster seats my kids are in because my oldest has had another growth spurt. He's now 85lbs and 4'7" so I know he still needs to be in a booster for a little while, but I found out that the IIHS has deemed the seats that he and his younger sister are in unsafe. They are in Compass B510s. So now what do I use. I'm honestly sick of finding out a couple years after I buy the so called "best" and "safest" booster that it ends up being not so safe. Here's their stats.

Oldest son is 85lbs and 55inches tall, currently in a Compass B510

Daughter is 53lbs and 50inches tall, currently in a Compass B510

Yongest son is 30lbs and 36 inches tall, currently in a Britax Marathon 5pt harness carseat

My carseat tech dh says:

Unless VA law states otherwise, at 85 lbs your oldest child may not need a booster seat at all.

Your 53 lbs daughter needs a basic booster seat that lifts her up so that the shoulder belt fits comfortably across her shoulder not her neck.

The youngest in the Britax is good and should be good for a while.

He recommends that you fill out the product registration card on whatever seat you buy and the manufacturer will notify you directly if there are any safety recalls.

He is curious what makes the current seats unsafe? Have they been recalled?

HTH.

What the IIHS says makes them unsafe is that because of the way the seat is the lap portion of the belt doesn't sit on the thighs/hips, it sits higher up on the stomach. VA law only says 8 years old, no height or weight, so I'm going to put the oldest out in the van tomorrow and see how the belt sits when he's in the van seat.
