Would a child psychiatrist be able to diagnose dyslexia?

Recommended Posts

I called my ped for a referral for testing with my ds8 who is struggling to learn to read. I told the nurse he was really struggling and I was wondering if the doctor would know where to have him tested for learning disabilities. She talked to the doctor and called back and said he would refer us to a child psychiatrist. I made the appointment, the first avaible was at the end of April :glare: Anyway I was just wondering if this is the right path to take or are there other places out there that I could have him tested at?

I really don't think so. A psychiatrist would help you out if there were other issues such as ADD/ADHD, behavioral issues, bipolar, depression, etc.

You likely need a neuropsychologist or reg. psychologist.

That said, I would check out http://www.roadstoeverywhere.com/3RsPlusRead.html (website is being updated so it isn't the best) for an EXCELLENT program for helping to teach reading that works very well for dyslexic kids. You could likely buy the entire program for less than 1-2 visits with the specialists.

It's possible that a psychiatrist would be able to diagnose dyslexia, but very rare that one would have that expertise. It's possible that the nurse misunderstood the doctor, or some people really don't distinguish between psychiatrists and psychologists and she may have mistranslated what the doctor said. At any rate, I would call back and find out. A neuropsycholgist, an educational psychologist, or some clinical psychologists can do the eval. For that matter, you can get it done in most public school districts for free.

I just checked the name my ped gave me and and it is a psychologist not a psychiatrist. Her credentials/special interests are Children & Adolescents, Psychological Testing, ADHD, Anxiety, Social Skills. I think I will call on Monday and see what kind of tests/evaluations she can do with my ds to make sure we are seeing the right doctor.
