Are there options other than DSL and digital cable?

You can also try Wild Blue satellite internet. If you are interested in DirecTV, you can get a discount by signing up for them and Wild Blue at the same time. Just call and ask the DirecTV people. (We weren't interested in satellite TV, but stumbled across this deal in our search for satellite internet and it turned out cheaper the first year to get both than to get just the internet. After the first year, we dropped DirecTV and kept the internet.)

We use HughesNet (as we were moving quite a bit, and there is nothing like being the middle of the Sierra Madres with not a rancho within walking distance, hauling your water from a stream, but having internet access (via genset that travels with us). :)

It is not as fast as DSL, but varies from around 256K to 512K+ (depending on how much you pay). You can get a used system off Ebay or checkout the datastorm users group (google is your friend) marketplace.
