Michelle @ Living Waters
I grew up being taught 4 oceans, but now you often see the Southern Ocean listed as well. Can someone tell me if I should be asking my children to name 4 or 5 oceans??? Thanks!
Parrothead
I think they should know all 5 of them. When it comes around to teaching oceans again (6th grade Earth science) I'm going to teach 5 and how and why of the creation of the Southern Ocean designation. H.S. Burrow
Hmm...I was curious so I looked over at my World Map and the following Oceans are listed: North Atlantic South Atlantic North Pacific South Pacific Arctic Indian Growing up, I was always told there is no Anarctic Ocean....but my Earth book by the Smithsonian has a map that has the following labeled: Arctic Ocean Atlantic Ocean Pacific Ocean Indian Ocean Southern Ocean What's correct? I purchased both the map and the book the same year...

Pretty in Pink
When I was a child I learned that there were 5 oceans: Pacific Atlantic Indian Arctic Antarctic Now, it looks as if the Antarctic has been renamed the Southern Ocean. Interesting.
