mom31257
What are some of your favorite short stories to introduce literary analysis (discussion of plot, setting, character, theme, etc.)? I am possibly hosting a middle grades book club soon. I don't know the families very well, so I would feel safer choosing literature that is not controversial nor contains any profanity. Thank you! Miss Tick
I did a once a week class using Figuratively speaking as a spine. There are a number of threads on here discussing how people have used that book if you are interested. Some of my favorite stories were: Nuts, Natalie Babbitt (moral) The Landlady, Roald Dahl (foreshadowing, suspense) The Open Window, Saki (surprise ending) Ransom of Red Chief, O. Henry (man vs man, character) The horse story in the book Tales From the Inner City, Shaun Tan (2nd person) Thank You Ma'am, Langston Hughes (theme: kindness) Those were the ones we liked the best. It did take some work to track down appropriate short stories! 1
