Dianthus
I'm looking for a step by step book, that can be used independently by a 12 yr old to practice drawing skills.

UnderTheHome schedules Augsburg's Drawing books. They're broken down into lessons, but a child could absolutely use them independently. https://underthehome.org/home?subject=Studio Art&grade=All Grades&layout=iconsonly&week=All Weeks
mathmarm
If I were going to assign a book to a 12yo for self-instruction and independent use, I'd start with The Draw Squad which is a more step-by-step version of The Drawing Textbook, which we use and love. There is also a book You Can Draw in 30 Days by the same author, that teaches the same skills, but was published more recently and contains less cartoony finishes.
