Another Lynn
My ds is almost 7, 1st grade, and over half way through ETC book 3. The reader I'm using with him has blends and silent e words. How much is it okay that he sounds out some words? How fluently should I expect him to read? Should I back him up to a reader he can read fluently? Should we alternate between a reader he has to "work at" and one that is easy? If he has to sound out "x" number of words should I have him re-read the page? Any thoughts about sounding out vs. fluency in a beginner reader are welcome! Thanks!
Mandamom
Have him read both kinds -- one is at instructional level and the other is his comfort level. He needs practice with both -- encouragement and help to get through new and difficult sounds along with practice building fluency. So, keep reading as much as you can -- alternate pages, help out with words, alternate books because the more you do the better he'll be -- as long as you don't hit frustration level :). Good luck.
