It's a book that had a man who was investigating some irish/scottish ruin or hill and gets sucked into a time travel situation.  He winds up in early scotland/ireland and becomes a well respected warrior.  It's not outlander.  I believe it was written before the year 2000.

Not precisely what you described - it's not really time travel, but more an alternate/faerie/more-real-than-mundane-reality realm - but otherwise very like, is Stephen Lawhead's Song of Albion trilogy (The Endless Knot, The Silver Hand, and The Paradise War).  I've reread them several times.
