Michelle in MO
Inferno, I have nothing to compare it to. However, the curriculum we used last year (Omnibus II) recommended Dorothy Sayers' translation, and I would have to say it was excellent! The language was clear and understandable, and Sayers' notes gave very helpful background information regarding characters that appear in the book and political and social events of the time. In fact, we liked her version so well that my middle daughter went ahead and bought Purgatorio and Paradiso, also translated by Sayers. Maverick
of all three--it comes in three separate paperbacks--in his Great Books class at co-op last year. Even though he was only a freshman he found it very accessible and actually enjoyed many parts of it.
Mommy22alyns
I'm a fan of John Ciardi's translation. :001_smile:
PamJH
Ditto John Ciardi. My daughter read it as a freshman and found it entertaining. She is a reluctant reader of anything in that period, but Ciardi's translation was her favorite. As a side note, she made a circular map of He## (not sure if you can spell the place out here without the thread being yanked) and the Ciardi translation made that easy.
