Spelling Guide to use with Dictation Day by Day

This year we began using Dictation Day by Day. It has been an amazing help to DS, 8, spelling. I really think keeping the spelling in sentences has been the key. His handwriting, spacing, conventions of sentences has all improved.

I own The ABCs and All Their Tricks. I used this to find more words that had the same spelling pattern. I had DS orally spell words as I called them out.

What I want next year is a resource that I can use with Dictation Day by Day that will teach us spelling rules. I don't want spelling lists, just a resource that goes over the rules. So that when a new spelling pattern comes up we can learn the rule, and I can pull out a few more words for oral spelling.

Logic of English has a book with all the rules and morphographs in one easy spot: Uncovering The Logic of English (LoE site, amazon).  It's OG based, like AAS, so it's the same basic rules/phonograms as AAS.

One thing I do with Dictation Day by Day is to use Spelling You See's visual marking system to mark AAS/OG phonograms and prefixes/suffixes (yellow for vowel digraphs, purple for r-controlled vowels, green for y-as-a-vowel, blue for consonant digraphs, orange for silent letters, pink for prefixes, red for suffixes).  I do studied dictation with Day by Day: I print out the pages, have dd mark the passage SYS-style and copy the passage, and then later in the day she does it from dictation.

AAS does not have such a book, but @ElizabethB has such a document with all the rules on her website.  you might look at this page first for the link to it;  http://www.thephonicspage.org/On Spelling/spellinglessonsl.html  but I'm pretty sure I got to her spelling rules document through another one of her pages, perhaps her Syllables Spell Success page.
