Dmmetler
https://athenasacademy.com/registration-enrollment/spring-2020-webinar-schedules/  DD will be teaching Herpetology II in the Spring. I suspect it will be Southern hemisphere heavy 🙂
Shahrazad
I know this is old but will another Intro to Herp class be coming soon and do you think that would be doable for a 8 year old? My son wants to be a herpetologist and I'm kind of at a loss for indulging his interests on it but fortunately, I remembered this one lady I used to be on a homeschool forum and a FB group with who also had a child obsessed with herps LOL! The class is icing on that cake. Edited April 5, 2020 by Shahrazad
Guest
Intro to Herpetology will be back in the fall. Athena's just opened summer registration, and I imagine fall will open in the next month or so. Athena's is hosting a lot of homeschool co-ops and classes that needed to take classes online at short notice, so they've been busy. DD will also be offering a brand new class in the fall, focused on dragons and the animals that likely inspired them.  In the short term, Gatorland in FL is doing "School of Croc"' where they FB live about a specific animal every weekday during the quarantine. I think you can also see past ones. A lot of zoos are doing online creature features as well-Memphis Zoo's has had a lot of herps. They have been quite good and entertaining.  I also suggest signing up for Skype a Scientist, which is opening their discussions with working scientists to everyone vs just working with schools/groups. They have had at least one really excellent herpetologist so far, and will likely have more.
Shahrazad
Yay! And thank you so much for the info! He will be extremely excited about the "School of Croc" stuff. Alligators and crocodiles, in particular, are his primary love.
Guest
In a few years, plan a trip to Florida, and do the trainer for the day program at Gatorland. My DD did it for her 13th birthday (which was the absolute youngest they would let her do it). She got to spend several hours before the park opened with one of their keepers, feeding and learning about the different animals (among other things, making sure that the pygmy rattlesnakes were off the trails). If he loves alligators and crocodiles, he will be in heaven. It's worth visiting younger, but the behind the scenes is really worth it for a teen who loves animals.  Also, the junior CSG would probably be of interest to him-it's an outreach program of the ICUN Crocodile Specialist Group. Mostly, it's just a way for them to raise funds, but it does provide access to other kids who adore crocodiles and the current research on them.
Shahrazad
Those are fantastic ideas! His father (my ex-husband) took him to the Alligator Attraction and Wildlife Learning Center (aka kissagator.com) when they went to Florida last (we both grew up in FL and have family there) and that is what really sparked his desire to be a herpetologist and his love of alligators and crocs, thereby winning the divorced parent bribe battle for the year 😅 so I bet this would be right up his alley. We live in Ohio but I grew up down the road from Gatorland and somehow have never been. Time to change that. School of Croc has been an awesome addition to our morning time routine.
