Veterans/Rememberance Day for Canadians & Americans

Recommended Posts

Since we both take time on 11/11 to remember those who have fought and served our countries, I'd like to share this link. http://www.terry-kelly.com/pittance/pittance_en.htm#

Yes, it's Canadian, but I think that the heart & lyrics apply to both countries. Read the text, then watch the video...well, that's a suggestion.

Be forewarned--its poignant & I cry every time I watch this.

  • 11 months later...

My Paternal Grandfather fought in WWI - he was very young, and my Dad was born to him when he was quite old, and I was born to older parents as well. I observe Vet's Day as a day of quiet remembrance and thankfulness. I have always bought a paper poppy from the wounded Vets selling them...fewer and fewer are seen every year. Let's not forget them!

In Flanders Fields

Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, MD (1872-1918)

Canadian Army

In Flanders Fields the poppies blow

Between the crosses row on row,

That mark our place; and in the sky

The larks, still bravely singing, fly

Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago

We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,

Loved and were loved, and now we lie

In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:

To you from failing hands we throw

The torch; be yours to hold it high.

If ye break faith with us who die

We shall not sleep, though poppies grow

In Flanders fields.

Thank you so much for posting this poem; I'd forgotten about it. We always buy poppies when we see them as they sell them in the States as well.

It was also Remembrance Day in Australia and New Zealand ( along with many other nations).

We observed the 2 minute silence at 11.00 am this morning, followed by reading In Flanders Fields. We even managed to buy some poppies this week!

Lest We Forget.

Thanks for reminding us; I'd forgotten all of that. Wasn't it originally called Armicist (sp) Day?

Yes, For us Australians ( and possibly New Zealanders), Remembrance Day used to be known as Armistice Day, and from what I have read, the name was changed after World War 2.

I found this bit of info on the name change.

The 11th of November was originally called Armistice Day, but was changed to Remembrance Day after World war II as a gesture to commemorate those who have died in all manner of war and conflict over the last century.

Thanks; I was having a brain freeze on the word Armistice and knew I had it wrong.
