RootAnn
I'm going to use Jacobs Algebra with dd#2 in the fall because I have it. I still need a solutions manual and/or Teacher's Manual/Guide of some sort. I'm waffling on whether to get the DVD from AskDrCallahan. Here are my questions: If you've used Jacobs Algebra, what other materials (bonus points for links!) do I need? There is a Teacher Guide on Amazon (ISBN 0716710757 or 978-0716710752) and a Teacher Guide (ISBN 9780890519868). Are these the same? There is a Dr Callahan Solutions Manual (ISBN 9780615315010) and another Solutions Manual (ISBN 9780890519875). I'm confused as to what to get! I definitely want the tests, so if I get one of the Teacher Guides, do I need a Solutions Manual? I can do the algebra, so I don't need worked out solutions for everything, just answers. If you've used AskDrCallahan DVDs for Jacobs Algebra, what did you/your kid think? I'd be using them mostly as a backup for me when I didn't have time to get to this kid for a few days, but I wanted her to keep moving forward in math. Are they helpful or horrible? Farrar
We just have the text and the TM - we didn't get the solutions manual or the Dr. Callahan stuff. It's been fine so far (about a third of the way in, I think). A couple of times I've had to actually put on my brain for finding the solutions, but I think that's probably good for me, especially for teaching the materials. I really like the TM's teaching suggestions, which we don't always use, but are nice to have. I find that the TM is not very user friendly overall. The answer key is a bit of a pain in terms of layout - my other kid is doing Dolciani algebra and it's so nice to have the full page with the answer right there. Plus not having the set II answers in the answer key (they're in the textbook) is an annoyance. Plus the general cheapness of the paperback TM. And the fact that you don't have the overheads which are pictured in the TM... well, it's not perfect, for sure. But I like the program overall so it's okay.
SilverMoon
I agree with Farrar about the TM. It definitely isn't the most convenient layout. We usually skip set 2 (the one with answers in back of the student text), so my grading is more streamlined. We'll go back to that set 2 for more practice if he struggles or just needs more. This is a strong math kid, fwiw.
