Looking for a condensed, enjoyable, not-too-heavy book of U.S. history for recent immigrant.

For my son-in-law actually.  :)  My kids LOVED Joy Hakim's History of US series when we used it back in the day.  I'm looking for something similar but more of a condensed single volume.

The reading level of History of US is just about right since English is his second language.

We are enjoying US by Hakim as well, we are reading the 10 volumes.

I noticed you said it is for a recent immigrant to the U.S, is this for the civics portion of the citizenship test? There are lots of free material on the web.Example: http://americanhistory.si.edu/citizenship/

These are free just for an overview of American History:

Thanks!  He'll definitely be using it for the citizenship test eventually!  In the meantime, he really enjoys learning more about U.S. history.  Thanks for the links!
