Corraleno Posted November 19, 2016 Share Posted November 19, 2016 I have both, and they seem equally warm to me. Some of the newest down alternatives are really really lightweight and warm. I have jackets that are about 1/10th as puffy as my old down coat and are just as warm. As for reasons to buy one over the other — synthetics don't compress as much, are easier to wash, don't stink when wet, and guarantee that no animals were tortured to produce it (80% of down comes from China, which practices live-plucking).
