Coffeebreak
My 11 year old has tried Singapore math, math mammoth and Saxon. Saxon was working for the elementary grades but she has failed every test since she has started Saxon 5/4. She has redone lessons and we use videos. I sit with here while she works and still it doesn't sink in? I am at a loss what I should do. She failed another test today. Should I jump ship again and try another curriculum. We already did the intermediate Saxon book. I feel like I am failing. I have been homeschool for 8 years and about to throw in the towel. Any advice? EmilyGF
How long did you try each curriculum for? Do you interact with her during the lesson or just sit by her? Emily
Coffeebreak
I did Singapore from pre-k until 1b. I switched to math mammoth to help supplement it because she wasn't retaining anything. I redid 1st grade after the Saxon placement test. She did Saxon 1,2,3, intermediate, then 5/4. She has been struggling through 5/4 for over a year. She watching the video, then I help her complete the practice problems and examples. She cries through the mixed practice. I correct it and I work the problems she got wrong with her. Innisfree
Does she have a diagnosis? Can you tell what the root of the problem is? Are her mistakes based on a lack of understanding, or memory issues, or short attention span, or poor frustration tolerance? If you're sitting with her as she works, some of this should be observable. Then that helps you figure out how to address the issue. It might not be a matter of curriculum at all, but of addressing her own specific needs.
AngelaVA
Maybe instead of buying another curriculum do the one you have at a slower pace and supplement with games of math to practice and solidify skills? That is what we are doing this year with my 10 year old. I'm not in a hurry for her to get to pre algebra. I would rather see really solid arithmetic skills first. In life you use arithmetic so much more. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
