Laura Corin
Would you be able to help me with another problem? We are learning the Greek word for 'the' and have come across a marking that has not previously been explained, as far as I can see. Underneath the singular dative masculine, feminine and neuter (to, te and to) there is a little wiggle. Can you tell me what it is for please? Thank you Laura

Alessandra
The only little wiggle thing that comes to mind is the iota subscript -- perhaps that is what you mean? Here is a wiki article with some letters that have subscripts: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iota_subscript Basically, words that used to have (long) ai or oi or ei dropped the i -- the little squiggle is just a reminder of what used to be there -- the pronunciation is not changed. It looks as though I am going to have to get my old Greek textbook out of storage -- my mind is not what it used to be -- I am surprised I remembered! And let me know if this is not what you mean, and I'll think some more.
