TheAttachedMama
The subject pretty much sums up my question. Is there a placement test for the McGuffey readers? Thanks!!
Elizabeth 2
http://momdelights.com/index.php/2016/04/18/how-to-place-your-children-in-the-mcguffey-readers/ I added the ability to spell cooresponding percentage of words, because they tend to track similarly in my kiddos.
ElizabethB
The NRRF reading grade level passages come directly from the 1879 McGuffey readers, but you may want to start a bit below level to build up confidence. http://www.thephonicspage.org/On%20Reading/readinggradeleve.html
Flowergirl159
My girls used/use McGuffey to read aloud to me. My younger two started with the Primer, but with my oldest I had her read the first page to me from one of the books, I think it was the second McGuffey off memory. I took Ruth Beechick's advice to check if a book is at their reading level. I think if a child has trouble with five words on the page, then that is the instructional level. If they have trouble with only three, then their own quiet reading level? If trouble with more than the five, it is too difficult. Anyway, that was how I began with my oldest. My younger two learned to read using the Primer and worked up from there. Generally I have used the Primer in kindergarten, First Reader in First grade, 2nd in 2nd etc. Except the Fourth reader usually takes us 4th and 5th grade to get through. Hope this helps :)
