umsami Posted May 5, 2016 Posted May 5, 2016 Saw this and thought it was a good article that brings up some points on why what seems like a good idea (donating surplus peanuts to feed starving Haitian children) might not be long term. http://www.npr.org/sections/thesalt/2016/05/05/476876371/u-s-to-ship-peanuts-to-feed-haitian-kids-aid-groups-say-this-is-wrong Quote
Lady Florida. Posted May 5, 2016 Posted May 5, 2016 That certainly makes sense. I didn't even know we were doing this. OTOH, my first thought before reading the article was, "But what about kids with peanut allergies? This could be deadly aid!" 1 Quote

Re: allergies I know that Plumpynut (probably spelled wrong....fortified peanut butter) is used in refeeding programs in Africa and I haven't seen much mention of allergies. Maybe it has to do with early exposure to peanuts and peanut products? I know I've read that early exposure reduces peanut allergies. Edited May 5, 2016 by umsami Quote
