Need help with a math problem...(PLEASE!)

Recommended Posts

I am about to pull my hair out. I never got this in school. Now I am trying to teach my dd something I don't completely get. (Creating scale models and drawings)

Here is the problem:

In a scale model of the solar system, a penny (0.019 m in diamater) is used to represent the sun, which is 139,200 km in diamater.

1. Determine the scale being used for this model. (I did get this one, it is approx. 1:7,326,300,000-checked answer it is correct.)

2. On average, Earth is 149,600,000 km from the sun. HOW FAR FROM THE PENNY SHOULD EARTH BE IN THE MODEL? (This has stumped me! Don't understand how to arrive at the answer!)

3. On average, pluto is 5,950,000,000 km from the sun. How far from the penny should Pluto bein the model?

4. The moon is about 400,000 km from the Earth. How afar away from Earth should it bein the model?

I have all the answers in the answer book but I need to know HOW they got the answers....

TIA
