Anne in CA
I'm just rewriting my NaNoWriMo and need to ask what kind of boat a person would need to sail efficiently from Mexico to the Panama Canal in, and then how long for them to sail to Alaska from the Panama Canal? Thank you, so much.
HSMWB
I would say at least 30 Ft sailboat. Most people go in 30-45 ft range, it takes exponentially more money and means the bigger the sailboat. Why would they be going to Alaska from Panama?? In general people go to Alaska in the summer.
HSMWB
As far as how much time - they would be fighting the currents the entire way. I couldn't even guess, but it would take a while. Like it would be more realistic to cross the ocean to the South Pacific, go up, then cross over to Alaska. Or, start in the PNW and go up the inner passage, IMHO of course, not knowing anything about why the characters would want to get to Alaska from being in Panama. SeaConquest
30-50 foot sailboat. You would sail (tack) from Panama to Hawaii and then to Seattle north from there. It would take you at least a month in each direction. Probably closer to 3 months up to Alaska, weather permitting.
SeaConquest
I often explain to people that a sailboat moves about as fast as most people can run or walk. That usually helps to put things into perspective for them when they think we can just sail up to the Bay Area for a weekend.
