how do you fix your books with binding problems?

Recommended Posts

Way back when I was volunteering at our school library in junior high, we'd fix books by reinserting the pages, dripping glue down inside the loose binding, and using rubber bands to hold it all tightly together until the glue dried.

I fix a lot of books. I like old books and sometimes they don't come in the greatest condition. Most of the books I purchase are used. Or, sometimes my kids are a little rough. Anyway, my point is that I do this a lot and have tried a ton of different ways. To be honest, the right tape really makes the job look nice and work well. But, if you are only repairing one book you might not want all this. So, here is what I use:

This tape (or anything other archival type tape) works well for the pages within the book. It doesn't fade, eventually come off, or yellow with age.

This tape is for covers and bindings. It is a cloth tape that is super strong and slightly stretchy. This might be my favorite tape ever. It is expensive but has a lot on there. I am still on my first roll and I have repaired SO many books. (It also comes in white). It is much nicer than duct tape and holds up better. The edges don't fray like duct tape either.

Finally, this tape is used for hinges and works beautifully. I have also used it for repairing splits in the binding between pages and pages coming out.

With these three tapes, I can fix any problems with books and it looks nice.
