daijobu
Dd is interested in participating. I have no idea where to begin. Has anyone participated and can get me started? Dd is taking AP chemistry right now. Where can I get her signed up? Do I need to organize a competition? What kind prep does she need to do? Thanks! JoanHomeEd
How to register students to participate http://www.acs.org/content/acs/en/education/students/highschool/olympiad/competitions.html Lots of past year exams can be found here http://www.acs.org/content/acs/en/education/students/highschool/olympiad/pastexams.html AP Chem is a good starting place. Next year, if she's still interested, ChemWOOT is excellent. http://www.artofproblemsolving.com/school/woot-chem Mine did 3 years of USNCO, let me know if you have any other questions.
daijobu
So, in order to participate, does the student need to join a high school team?
JoanHomeEd
No team, just contact the coordinator of your ACS Local Section. daijobu
Thanks. She told us she's contacting some local schools, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed.
JoanHomeEd
I think the coordinator will determine whether there is a need to do the local competition next month. If she doesn't have a lot of participants, it is straight to the national round in April. So, on your student’s part, just practice and show up!
daijobu
Thanks again. We were just informed by the coordinator of a local high school where dd can take the exam. She's taking another practice test now!
snowbeltmom
My son participated the year he took AP Chemistry. Our public school doesn't participate, but I was able to find another local school that would permit him to join its team. The format is similar to Mathcounts - the students from all the participating schools meet at an area college on a Saturday morning and take a test. The top scorers from that test are invited back to take the national exam. The national exam is an all-day affair and also includes a lab portion in addition to the written test.
