Messy work - is it okay to have them type everything

With math, I make my son redo the messy work.

 

With literature, history, religion, and science.. I am allowing him to type his answers.. I feel a little guilty about this, but he is a slow worker and it saves time... his mind moves a lot faster than his hands do...

 

Am I hurting him by allowing him to type, or helping him??

 

I am trying to figure out what to be a stickler on and what to let go of.

I don't think its helping or hurting; but make sure he realized that at the college level, he may have professors that require something different.

AP tests, ACT tests, SAT tests all require handwritten work on essays. The rest is fill in the bubble. So a kid eventually needs to be able to write a short essay by hand and fill in little bubbles neatly.:D

I have my ds12 type many of his assignments. I have him practice handwriting still, although he is 12, and he also handwrites some shorter, 1 paragraph assignments, or note takes or writes outlines, or sometimes a freewrite. I want him to keep developing those muscles, but he definitely writes more when he types.

all essays and papers, but be able to write neatly enough to do the following:

 

1. Take notes.

 

2. Fill out a job application neatly.

 

3. Be able to legibly hand-write an essay, such as is required for the SAT and ACT tests, and also for final examinations for classes which require essays, usually in the humanities.

My son hates writing. I let him do most of his work typing. But I do think he needs to have the skill. He types essays and other papers. He writes notes, and fill in the blank answers for Latin. We are also going to do some penmanship practice this year and next, in preparation for the writing portion of the S.A.T.
