Anyone doing iLs?

Recommended Posts

My understanding is that iLs is a particular, trademarked program that is one type of listening therapy.  I'm not aware that Therapeutic Listening is a different trademarked program but certainly that's possible.  I'm not up-to-date on whether there's been any more attempts at research in this area.  There is an issue with the improvements waning over time for some people.  The "evidence" is sketchy, IIRC.

We did iLs many years ago in combination with OT at the Star Center.  It seemed helpful, but it's not easy to separate out the effects from the OT.  Dr. Miller indicated that they saw better results when adding the listening therapy; she may have said something about helping the brain making changes faster (neuroplasticity).

Just yesterday I pulled out the old CDs - after our 3-month stint of OT eight years ago, we bought the iLs with the old-fashioned CD player LOL.  I am trying to get ds12 to listen to them while he does his homework even though that's not the type of activity one is supposed to do while listening.  I just figure it's better than what he currently listens to in order to block noise, youtube videos of the Monkey City computer game with the sound of balloons constantly popping.  He sure could use another round of anything to help sensory motor integration.

There have been some discussions about listening therapy:

My limited experience ....

The PS did TL with my older lil guy. I don't know what system it was...but it completely entranced him. He spent more of his free time at school doing that than anything. My extremely active kid would opt to stay in from recess to do the TL. They had the pad on his lap and something under his feet too. Don't remember what though.

He would walk away calm as a church mouse from this and this was before meds. It was completely astonishing to me the affect it had on him. Oh private OT did this too but in the PS system I could have his spec ed teacher have him do this right before school let out. It helped me get him home, a snack, and on the couch for quiet time until it was time to work again ( I HAD to after school him. Needs alot of repition)

FWIW, it had its place in our lives. I really want to get a system just for the calming affect it has on my guy. They are so expensive though.

I'll be looking for something I can use after Christmas. I have too. We have too much work to do to not have this daily.

PS. Before he started this daily at school....h would have the most horrible incredible loud crazy meltdowns. I mean....sent him spiraling completely out of control like to the point, I had to call my husband home from work sometimes even. So....I'm a huge fan.

Thanks for the input, Kat w. That is amazing it had such a calming effect on him. My guy is 3, with suspected Apraxia and SPD. He has self regulation issues and has been a terrible sleeper, which is why the Dreampad has been recommended. I am hoping it helps him be able to sit for his speech therapy better (he is doing better). He also does not transition well. This is all so foreign to me, so I appreciate the input.

My guy who did this was young too when be started it privately. 2 yo. It's the only way they could get him to do anything....speech ( which was learning to sign at thst point) and OT.

He has apraxia (dyspraxia of a couple different sorts I'm told) and spd too. Plus other stuff lol. Yes. This was incredibly helpful for transitions .

Hope it works for you too :)

Mom28great,

I just found this. Says the cost for brainbuilder is 200. They had xd's to buy with it too. Each was about 15.

I don't care at this point. I have Christmas to get through and am being driven completely nuts even in meds. He's escalated last month or so and this is goin to be a tough Christmas for me. I'm getting it , I will scimp from the grocery budget if u have to .

Maybe worth looking at. They had a sleep one too.
