video game consoles for educational resources or non-violent games?

Does anyone know if one of the video games, like xbox one or playstation 4, would be better for things like non-violent games or using it for educational resources?  I have read that you can use them for things other than just playing games, but I don't really know what is possible.  Is one better than the other?

We don't spend much time playing video games here, but it is a fun thing my kids do every now and then.  But, we have an older system and newer games don't seem to be available on it anymore.

We use our PS3 for watching Netflix, the Wii for non-violent games.  :o  That sounds like we really have too many gaming systems in the house, but dh indulged me with the Wii as a gift many years ago since I lost my original NES.  I love being able to still play my old favorites every once in a while.

It is.  I just can't bring myself to get a Wii U yet, not when I won't use the features.  But if I was looking for a new, child-friendly system it would still be Nintendo.  We've had a hard time finding the same quality for kids (and not insanely difficult or shooting) things for the Playstation, and the X box didn't look much better.

Edit: I just noticed your kids are 10 and 15.  In that case I'd go with the Playstation, I think.

If you can find a good used game store near you, some wii's will allow you to play the old Gamecube games on them. We have a bunch from when the kids were younger that I keep around because we can play them on our wii. You just have to have the GC controllers.

X-box was originally marketed as an adult platform and most of the games still follow suit. Go with Nintendo products. We actually just use our iPods and Mac for games as there are many great options for the kids (Big Brainz products for the compute are a huge hit here). For older kids there are plenty on the App Store that are good.

We wound up getting the Xbox One and it's been a great choice.  We don't get any of the violent fighting games, anyway, and mostly stick to LEGO and sports games.  It has terrific graphics.  We can use it play DVDs, watch Netflix, Amazon Prime, etc., and I just discovered I can also listen to audio CDs through the TV with it.  It's been a good choice.  Although, I think we probably would have been happy with whatever we chose, as they all seem pretty similar.

Just happened to see this and wanted to update in case anyone else was exploring the same choice.
