Byzantium Book??

The only one I can think of off the top of my head is Anna of Byzantium, which is a fictionalized story of Anna Komnene. There's an afterword detailing some of the changes the author made to turn reality into a more tightly-woven and compelling story.

This is what my daughter read, and she really liked it.

It's a good book. However, there are many changes from reality which the OP should be aware of if she's using it for school. Most obviously, the author pushed Anna's coup attempt to her teens, neatly eliding 40 years of marriage and children. She also eliminated half the children in the family and made John out to be a whiny, sociopathic brat instead of the pious and thoughtful man history remembers him as, who gave generously to charity and never sentenced anybody to death during his reign.

This is all noted in the afterword, of course, and I can see how waiting 40 years for the action to start would be a little anticlimatic.
