MSNative
Looking for info about which direction to go. I have some disks that are 90% degenerated. Gen practitioner prescribes strong anti-inflammatories and pain meds. No thank you. Specialist recommends surgery. Eek. Local chiropractor that a lot of my friends go to and rave about says that he can improve it substantially through adjustments and corrective care. Obviously that sounds so much better than the other options but I don't have experience with chiropractors. Would love to hear other people's experiences. Thanks. Guest
Mine is not degenerative disk but bulging disk, which impinges on nerve which leads to excruciating pain all down my left side. Four months ago, I could not walk or stand for more than 4 minutes. That made grocery shopping interesting. :0) I had been seeing a chiropractor to deal with a neck issue, but this sneaked up on me. Adjustments didn't do anything, so he started me on a 20x series of decompression (think: medieval rack), accompanied by an adjustment and a back-support belt, which I wear almost all day long I am a lot better now. I rarely *have* to sit down, and last week, I went 4-wheeling, mountain hiking and a 3000 mile trip. No pain. The decompression is not cheap and it didn't do *anything* until about time #12. I *have* to wear the back brace, at least for now. Insurance covered most of the adjustments but not the decompression. I have two friends who had the same thing, bulging disk. Both of them opted for surgery. Both of them are fine, now. I didn't want to deal with surgery as I have auto-immune issues, and didn't want to be in a hospital. I am very thankful that I went to this chiropractor. I still have a ways to go, but it's not anything like as bad as it used to be, even at its worst. The "worst" now is pretty much what the "best" was 4 months ago.
Tess in the Burbs
I do but every chiropractor I met wanted a contract and 2k out of pocket money to 'help' me, but not cure anything. no thanks. For now, I take pain meds as needed. There are times I can barely walk. And I would consider surgery in the future. Only you can decide what course you want. I waited so long to get my hysterectomy, but now I wish I had done it sooner. I just need to get over the same decision for my back lol.
MSNative
I really appreciate hearing your experiences. Patty Joanna, I am so glad you have found some relief. ;) Tess- yep, we are looking at almost 3k for a year of corrective care. Would gladly pay it if I knew it would work but the thought of throwing all that money away...
dhudson
I had to have surgery after 10 months of chiropractic care, physical therapy and natural care. The surgery was necessary and with unbearable pain and a 4 year old and twin 1 year olds it was expedient. Now I manage degenerative disc disease with Pilates and arnica.
