Short stories / folk tales from around the world?

Recommended Posts

Next year my 9th grader will be studying world geography & cultures. She has a hefty list of classic literature for her English class, but I'd like her to do some reading for geography as well. I have a few literature selections on my list, but wondered if there was an anthology of short stories or folk tales from around the world that would be appropriate for a high school student.

Thank you for any help!

I'm scheduling Folk Tales and Fables of the World by Hayes and Ingpen for my 10th and 7th graders doing geography this year. I've only read a few of the tales so far, but it looks like a decent collection. (Found this on my own at a random visit to Half Price Books)

A Multicultural Reader is a textbook of poems and short stories from around the world. I think volume 1 is junior high and volume 2 is highschool. These selections are more modern. There are questions you can easily skip or use for discussion starters, and some writing prompts. They're great collections. My only complaint is they're fiddly to schedule by region. It doesn't clearly mark which country the stories originate from, but you can reference the author bios in the back to find this info.

All three books can be found used for under $5 each on Amazon.

This may not be specifically what you are looking for, but I am considering it for my DD's study of world geography and cultures.

Great Myths of the World (Dover Books on Anthropology and Folklore)

I was just about to link that same book.  It's a good one.

We did a lit/geography class last year and used this book: http://www.amazon.com/Best-Loved-Folktales-Anchor-folktale-library/dp/0385189494

Also, https://www.learner.org/courses/worldlit/was excellent for a preview for some of the books we read.

Thanks so much for these resources! We will certainly incorporate into our studies. :001_smile:
