Can You Recommend Gamebooks/Choose Your Own Adventure-Type Books?

Recommended Posts

I think my son would really enjoy some Choose Your Own Adventure-type books. I remember reading them when I was a kid. Does this genre still exist? Any books of this sort that you can recommend? Bonus points if they are of decent quality. He comfortably reads at about a 3rd-4th grade level. Thanks!

They are truly bad, but I don't think that's a problem really. My kids got on a kick with them and really enjoyed them for a couple of months. They're fun reading. One of them - War with the Evil Power Master - has been sitting in the bathroom and I was trying to make all the worst, most reckless decisions and get myself killed. Unfortunately, I kept ending up beating the Power Master and saving everyone that way, so they might also teach poor decision making skills. ;)

I haven't seen any other books that do this, unfortunately. I know when I was a kid they were so big that there were some literary spinoffs (I had some Narnia themed ones) and some historical knockoffs (dh apparently had a bunch that were about American history) but I doubt the writing was actually any better...

That's hilarious. :) I did find a few at our library, but I was hoping that there might be a more literary version. Ah well. I am pretty sure that he will love them. Thanks, Farrar.

I was curious so I found the old Narnia ones I had as a kid:

Also, I have no idea about the appropriateness of this, but as I was googling, I fell down a googlehole and accidentally found this, which has such a delightful premise that *I* might need to read it. It would certainly be more fun to have in the bathroom than the Evil Power Master:

We are going to read Narnia over the summer, so these will be great. I think that I will keep Shakespeare in mind for down the road. Thank you!

We have really enjoyed these choose your own books:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/1429662735/ref=mp_s_a_1_8?qid=1431317658&sr=8-8&pi=AC_SX110_SY165_QL70&keywords=orphan+train+adventure&dpPl=1&dpID=51jGSld4AiL&ref=plSrch

There is a whole series, each one is centered around history. I really like that they don't all end happily ever after, because life doesn't really work that way.

American girl also had some great choose your own adventures, but I doubt your son would like those ;-)
