It's smart to pay people in the community to be on your side.  Where I live poaching and piracy has been an issue for over 200 years (with no end in sight).  You can't possibly expect people who are terribly poor to care about conservation without helping them feed their kids some other way. 

 

I do worry about them putting those women out there unarmed.  Maybe poaching is much more genteel in Africa than it is here, but it looks awfully dangerous to throw those women out there with nothing more than a radio for protection.
