Suzanne in ABQ
Please help me figure out this sentence: Toby made himself giggle. Or similarly, Toby made her giggle. This sentence came up today when we were studying object complements. Dc came up with it as an example, but "giggle" doesn't seem to be an object complement noun, nor an object complement adjective. (It doesn't rename or describe the subject.) It seems to be acting as a verb, but not really. I think I've come to the conclusion that it isn't an object complement at all, but what is it? Direct object? No. While we're at it, what about "himself"? It's not a direct object either. HELP! I'm confusing myself. What am I forgetting? This is bugging me. Thanks. VaKim
Pretty sure it is an infinitive phrase without the "to." http://people.rit.edu/kecncp/Courses/Materials/Grammar/Infinitives2.htm Scroll down to #44 to see diagram. I think when the "to" is missing, you put it in parentheses. http://grammar.ccc.commnet.edu/grammar/diagrams2/one_pager1.htm
Suzanne in ABQ
Thank you so much for answering, Kim. I forgot such a thing existed. I can sleep easy now. :)
hornblower
I'd add that I think the 'make' is a catenative verb. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Catenative_verb
Suzanne in ABQ
Thanks Hornblower. I hadn't heard that term before
Jacquelyn in NC
And the word "himself" is a reflexive pronoun, I believe.
