The most encouraging thing I heard come out of my mom's mouth when she started attending al anon and dad started his rehab program was the statement, "all those other times he'd quit for a few months, he wasn't really sober. He was just white knuckling it and was set up to fail from day one." The fact that, almost 3 years later, he attends a daily meeting tells me he finally understands that he needs support and something more than willpower.
